They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To

I was whipping potatoes for lunch with my handheld mixer. It is avocado green and was a wedding gift 54 years ago. It still works just like it did way back then. I have mixed every cake, dessert, recipe, and you name it using this little guy. My KitchenAid stand mixer is in the storage closet.

The mixer is a General Electric CAT. NO. D3M57. It was made in the U.S.A. in Bridgeport, Conn. per the information and abbreviation style on the bottom of the mixer. If you find one of these in an estate or for sale somewhere, try it. It has 3 speeds: off, low, med, and hi. The white beater ejector is next to the red speed control on the top in front of the handle. That's it. No other bells and whistles.

I thought for fun I would Google it. None of the photos being shown are my mixer even though the number is the same. Maybe they changed styles and feature back then but kept the same number. Who knows?

Am sure a picture of your mixers inner parts would show they are metal, and built to last. Once the inner parts were assembled with plastic, the meaning of built to last changed.

@On It Bravo for old GE hand mixers. I have one I got as a wedding gift in 1964, and it's the only mixer I ever had all my married life. It could handle the stiffest cookie dough; I used it for everything. It still works although one of the beaters came unwelded. I did just a few years ago get a KitchenAid pretty turquoise hand mixer.

Just like "Lifetime Guarantee"...who's lifetime...and what is the life expectancy of, say, a mixer, mower or ANYTHING?!?!??!?

Today a three year warranty is a shock!!

More like 90 days for most stuff.

Yes. We both grew up on farms. The big meal of the day was at noon. We called it dinner, and at night we had supper. We moved to urban areas and started our careers. We were apart during the day, so we had lunch which was a lighter meal. Dinner was in the evening. Since we retired and are home together, we switched back to having our bigger meal at noon and something light for our evening meal. It really helps my acid reflux to avoid a heavy evening meal. (We have never eaten breakfast.)

I grew up in NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had horses, 100 head of white faced herfords, and 3 commercial chicken houses.

Dinner was in the evening since we were in school and the others working.

Were they Charolais cattle? Oddly enough there were no animals on our farm. We only had plants. Cotton for our income and vegetable patches for our food supply. We picked the vegetables just after sunrise for maximum freshness. It took most of the morning to prep and cook them. We ate at noon. The afternoon was spent weeding, pruning, and visiting relatives. Then we did it all over again the next day. I miss those times.

trusty, reliable, well made General Electric hand mixer from

1963. It cost $10.00, back then. It is yellow and the top is gray

with chrome. My best friend has the same mixer, also.

This model is 30M47 and was made in Bridgeport, Conn.

While raising my five children, I baked every week, using that mixer. I still use it, but now I have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer and

use that for large recipes. My kids loved to lick the beaters when I made whipped cream or frosting.

By the way, On It, many of the retired people that I know,

have their large meal in the early afternoon rather than evening. Then they have something light to eat at night. I would probably do that too, but my youngest son still lives at home and I make dinner in the evening so that he can eat after work.

I hardly use my hand mixer. I like using the hand one I got at IKEA years ago, like we had on the farm, I use it all the time for mashed potatoes with the skins on. When baking breads, I thought the big stand mixer would be good for kneading, I bought one off a neighbor for $5.00, then found out it's way too heavy for me to lift, so gave it away to my daughter, and I just knead by hand. I grew up on the farm, and our noon meal was dinner and supper at night. Lunch was at 4:00 for coffee and Mom's home made cinnamon rolls, for Dad when he was out in the field. Nice memories.

I used to go up in our windmill to see how far he was getting to the road and I'd bring him lunch on my bike. Those were the days!

My washing machine recently broke for the second time in a little less than two years. My grandmother had one of those washing machine with the ringer on the top. It never broke. I think it still works.
