Yellow Watermelon!

How many of you are familiar with yellow watermelons? Up until today, I never knew such a color existed.

I went shopping the other day and picked up two small melons. I just looked at them to determine their quality and never looked at the small little tag on them. Today I decided to get one of them ready for dessert to serve after dinner tonight. I was surprised when I cut it open to see a bright yellow color as opposed to the usual viibrant red color.

I then took a look at the little tag and it clearly said yellow watermelon. In all of my years of buying and eating watermelon I never knew they came in any other color.

I had to look it up and the information I saw was that originally they were yellow and then over thousands of years they cross-bred them to get that red variety. The yellow ones lack lycopene but have more beta-carotene than the red ones.

I tasted a small piece and it was sweet and juicy just like a watermelon should be.

I guess I just learned something new today. It was just a little bit of a surprise to see a bright yellow melon when I was expecting the usual red.

Yes Yum. We have had yellow & orange seedless. Both were really good. I just finished eating what watermelon we had left yesterday. It's so good.

I looked online to see what other colors it comes in. Did not know they have purple, blue or green?

We often visit a farm stand to buy fruits and veggies in the summertime. They sell yellow, orange and red watermelons. I really like the yellow ones. They are always sweet and make a nice presentation on a fruit tray.

I have never seen yellow watermelons in the grocery store.

I've eaten yellow watermelon and, although they're good, it just doesn't seem to taste as good as a red one. I'd go for an old fashioned red one any day.

I love watermelon but hadn't heard of this variety. Thanks for the review. Maybe, if I see them, I'll try one. So far this season I've only purchased one watermelon - one of those small round ones - and it's been pretty good.

They are my favorite!!

My aunt and uncle grew them on their farm in my younger years.

I have eaten yellow and red watermelon my entire life. I really love both of them but I have to say I still like the red just a little more. I think they have a lighter texture than the yellow ones do.

I know yellow meated watermelons have been around in this neck of the woods for 45 years at least. I don't care for them, like I wouldn't care for a green-fleshed peach.

You eat with your eyes too! Watermelon has to have that fabulous color. And a little salt. Usually!

There are no purple, blue or green flesh watermelon...these are photoshppped hoaxes.

I grew up in the 60's eating yellow watermelons. I love them. They are usually a bit sweeter than red. I haven't seen any here yet this summer, but I'll keep looking.

Part of the fun of watermelon is that vibrant pink/red combined with the bright green. It stimulates two of the senses.

I finally googled this because I wanted to see what they look like. I assumed that they probably looked different on the outside but was surprised to see that they look the same on the outside.
