Do you use much iceberg lettuce? I went back to using a lot of it when my beloved Romaine lettuce was having lots of recalls. I enjoy it because it is very crisp, easier to wash, stores beautifully and is perfect for tacos.

I have also discovered that it is better than Romaine for the above reasons and because what we make, basically chopped salads, we like better with it.

We always add chunks of bell pepper, cucumber, onion, tomato, celery and then throw in whatever else we have such as fruit, dried cranberries or cherries or blueberries along with fresh ones, nuts, broccoli, carrots, avocado, cheese, fritoes for taco salad and lots of taco flavored beef, corn kernals, and sometimes grain for a more grain-based salad.

We'll add ham, tuna or any other protein, including eggs. So for us, salad has become a lot more than mostly greens. And we make our own oil and vinegar dressings too. But I like the veggies and fruits and less lettuce these days.

Nothing beats iceberg on a sandwich! And yes, the crunch on tacos is the best. I think it has a very nice flavor.

For my salads I still prefer hearts of romaine - when you get down to the end it's pretty crunchy. My neighbor's rabbits love the core.

If DH had his way we'd be eating iceberg, he prefers a crunchy salad. I quit buying it, though, because I could never find nice solid heads, they were always kinda spongey. I also don't believe there is much nutritional value in iceberg lettuce. When we have salad I'll combine spring mix and romaine, maybe throw in some extra spinach if I have it. That way we're covering all the bases, better nutrients and crunch.

I love iceberg lettuce for it's crispness. I like it mixed with the darker lettuces for color and textures. And as others have said, I think it's the best on sandwiches. It lasts a longer time than other lettuces, too, another point in it's favor.

Growing up, we usually only had iceberg in salads, but it's true in recent years I was using other varieties more.

I've tried them all, but iceberg is my favorite. Love crunchy lettuce- it's refreshing to me.I've had people comment in their opinion it has no flavor. Oh well, to each her own.

I,also love to add dried cranberries to my salads.

I love the leaf lettuces way more. But this week I got Iceberg. Only thing is, I never know what dressing to put on it.

I use EVOO & balsamic vinegar for the leaf, but somehow, that just doesn't seem right for Iceberg. Maybe I'll take your cue, @Sooner, and do the EVOO & vinegar.

@Harpa wrote:

@Harpa We use EVOO almost always, along with vinegar (I love Sherry vinegar!) of all kinds, salt and pepper and garlic salt when we don't have fresh garlic.

To that basic we may add mustard, Dijon or grainy mustard, honey, citrus juice, or cider vinegar, or a touch of berries or berry juice of some kind.

Occasionally we'll add a touch of yogurt or mayonnaise, or if we decide to go all out for a wedge salad we will use a base of 1/3 mayo, 1/3 yogurt or sour cream, and 1/3 buttermilk. We add herbs, spices or even some powdered Ranch Dressing mix. We are creative folk!

I stopped eating it for a while when "they" said there was no nutritional content and moved to romaine, I need crispy lettuce. One of my favorite salads is a wedge salad with iceberg, blue cheese, and bacon. I'm putting it on my shopping list now! It seems the past two years, every time I bought romaine there was a recall so I moved to chopped kale. It's all right but I'd prefer romaine or iceberg
