My microwave just died

I cook in the microwave more often than I cook on the stove! It died tonight just as the casserole was fnished.

it's about 10 years old I had been thinking of replacing the oven ever since I dropped the glass plate for the turntable and had been using a microwave safe plate!

Went on Amazon - new oven will be here on Monday!

Did you buy a Microwave or a microwave turntable? I am confused but it does not take much to confuse me. ;-)

Oh, good for you. Mine was about that age (about 12 years old, actually) and I had to buy a new one. I miss my old one. It was like losing an old friend. I use mine every single day, at least twice per day.

Same here - I'm going to have to cook (and reheat) on the stove Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday ... and Monday's breakfast!

Worse thing about cooking on the stove - is cleaning up later. With the microwave - just once over with a sponge!

I do NOT like my stove. I think that is one reason I use it so infrequently. It is the high-profile GE that my husband chose. Glass top. Cleaning it is like scrubbing floors. I have to use Barkeeper Friend any time I use it. I wish he had never laid eyes on that thing.

Enjoy your new microwave. I certainly love my new one. This one, although not as pricy as the previous one, has some easier function keys for setting the clock, timer, surface light, etc.

@ALRATIBA May I ask what brand and wattage you bought?

Mine is way way older than you'res was.......over 20 GE average power I'd guess....

I don't like cooking in it.......used to warm dog food - coffee - warm up some veggies........but nothing big time.

Dread the day it kicks.......and then getting rid of the old one.....

@ALRATIBA Ours died about 6 months ago. We ordered one on Amazon too...it was at our door in less than 24 hours! Love Amazon!❤️👍

I barely use my microwave. I would get rid of it, but it is useful for thawing meat. It takes up too much room.

I'd be way upset if my m'wave died after only 10 years. But I admire your ability to order another one so quickly.

I use mine a few times daily, but have gone weeks without using the stovetop.

I bought my m'wave on sale in July 1987. I don't think they even make Goldstar brand anymore, but mine's still working like new. I will be crushed when it finally dies.

Sure - no problem. I shop "by price." Usually buy a name brand I've at least heard of.

I think this is the 4th one I've purchased in my lifetime. I'm getting about 10 or so years out of each one.

As I've mentioned many times, I live in an apartment in NYC. We have a great deal around here when getting rid of old appliances, furniture, etc.

Things I can carry myself - just bring them down to the bulk disposal area and everyday - a truck comes by and picks everything up.

If it's too heavy (I had to get rid of one of those old enormous TVs with a picture tube - it weighed a ton) .... just call the offce and they send someone (or two) over to remove the item - just a mnimal fee.

@ALRATIBA - I hope your new microwave is great! I, too, purchased a new unit this year after 22 years with my previous one. It actually still works perfectly even though it is a lower wattage, but it has developed peeling paint on the "ceiling" over the past few months, and I don't need that kind of fire hazard worry. (It's currently sitting in the box from the new microwave since I haven't quite gotten to 100% trust in the new one, though it has given me no problems yet. )

That peeling stuff had started on mine also - all round the turntable wheels was getting worn away. I tried to scrub it off - w/o any luck. Just as well it died a "pieceful" death.

OMG! I don't cook much anymore. I put everything off but if my microwave died, it would be replaced immediately.

It's a built in so it wouldn't be easy to replace but I'd find a way.

I got a new microwave about three weeks ago now. (Hamilton Beach. Stainless steel front, 1,000 watts, 1.1 cu ft. for $75 at Walmart.) My old one worked, but the display on it had died years ago so you were largely using it blind. The door opening mechanism was also a bit iffy, so it was time for a new one.

@x Hedge Enjoy that older Microwave...they make them only to last 3-4 years new now....my first one bought many years ago like yours lasted about 15 years....my last one died in 5.... I imagine this new one will have a short life too....I use my microwave FOR EVERYTHING just about🥰👏

I had to replace my GE about 3 years ago and replaced with the same. It was over 20 years old. It's above the stove, black stainless and 1000w. I love this one as it has a turntable and the other didn't. I rarely cook, but use the microwave every day.

A number of years ago when I had to replace my former, 18yr old, microwave what I did was to keep that big glass plate for rotating so that, in case anything happens to the new one, I'll have a back up. Of course, since I saved it I haven't needed it but you never know!

Glad you'll get a replacement sooner than later. I also use my microwave, probably, more than the stove these days. I wouldn't want to be without it.

Sharp is my brand of choice for microwaves, ever since my first one several decades ago.

I got a new one three weeks ago when my old one stopped working after 16 years. New ones don't last too long. I bought mine at Amazon too. I bought a Sharp 1200 Watt. Its stainless steeI. I had wanted an 1100 Watt white one but I didn't see one with the things I wanted in it. My last one was 1100 Watts and was much less heavy and was smaller than the new one. It was a GE.. It was great. The new one seems all right so far except the keypad is hard to see in semi darkness. I stayed away from GE this time because my friend bought one and it only worked for 29 days.
