Popcorn WHAT???? Salad??

So Molly Yeh has a salad recipe that has the internet talking.

It's a salad with popcorn in it and she insists that it's a popular and common Midwest dish. She said she grew up with it at church suppers, potlucks, barbecues, etc.

However, I am from the Midwest and I have never once had this or even heard of it. I don't think I would have any interest anyway, because the thought of popcorn in salad, getting all soggy and mushy, grosses me out. I can't honestly judge it though because I haven't had it.

Have you ever heard of this or tried this?

Also from the Midwest- Indiana and Michigan. Never heard of this. No one in my world ever heard of it or ever made it.

I am in South Dakota. Been here my entire 61 years. Never heard of this salad or anything close to it. I agree with others-sounds gross!!

I saw a video of this this morning and it looks absolutely gross and most commentors agreed.

It was a mustard, mayo, sour cream base with cut up veggies and....pop corn.

So gross.....

I grew up in the Midwest (IL) and, thankfully, never, ever heard of such a thing.

However, thinking of this makes me a little queasy.

Me too, originally from Evansville, In (now Tx) never heard of it. I make coney island spread and nobody has ever heard of that either. LOL

bolongna, cheese, onions, pickles, Miracle Whip , little honey mustard, dash of pepper. Mix in food processor, bolongna , first, then cheese, process your onions and sweet pickles. Put in big mixing bowl, add Miracle Whip, mustard and pepper.

Nobody has ever heard of it. LOL Great summer time fare.

They sell Popcorn Salad in our grocery store deli.

I asked for a sample and that's how much I bought...zero...didn't care for it.

Just wierd with popcorn in a salad.

I'm from the midwest and have never heard of it either. I don't know what kind of salad it was but I could see it if it was sprinkled on top of a regular salad much like croutons. I wouldn't do it because I don't want croutons (or anything remotely close to it) in my salads.

@SharkE I've never heard of that spread either! So you actually process the bologna in a food processor? And what do you eat it with?

@Ladybug724 I saw that show, and I've never heard of it before. However, there are other recipes for popcorn salad out there on the Internet. They usually do call for the popcorn to be mixed in at the last minute. I guess it could be compared to a panzanella salad or an Asian salad with chow mein noodles. Foodwise, I'll try anything once (except fugu).

I live in the Midwest never heard of it so goggled. The article stated popcorn salad has a long history in the Midwest...an example from the 1920s, a banana sliced in half with popcorn & gobs of mayo on top & the article included other recipes through the years. Does any other region want to claim popcorn salad as their own? We'd be more than happy to give it away, lol.

spread on bread eat like any other kind of chicken, ham salad.

don't process it to death, just pulse it 2-3 times, same for the cheese.

Some people grate that block cheese in it, husband just wants American Kraft cheese.

I'm thinking it must've been a pass down /family thing. Way back before my time they had what they call sausage grinders/meat grinders you clipped on the edge of your table. Heavy aluminum things with long handle and you turn the handle and had different sizes of blades that fit.

Now days we got food processors that do the work and throw in dishwasher.

No popcorn salad thank you very much. Why do people come up with stuff like this? The more bizarre the more they love it--the internet that is. Anything goes.

I think cornbread salad is pretty bizarre- but the ones I've had with black eyed peas and tomatoes in it is pretty good!

I found it on a menu in a restaurant in Cleveland in 2015. Also found it on Jaime Oliver's website (the British chef).
