Temp - tations at Home Goods

I have recently purchased the muffin baker, 2 quart, and 1 quart pieces in Home Goods, they are EXACTLY the same but they dont say Temptations. I thought Tara was the inventor? I have purchased many sets from QVC and I really like them but feel lied to. What do you think?

Maybe Home Goods bought up overstock that Tara's supplier was getting rid of????

I used to see lots of HSN and QVC things at auctions. Dealers bought up whole pallets of items - jewelry, linens, kitchenware, etc. I have a set of great frying pans that cost me almost nothing compared to the onair prices.

Quite a few years ago I saw them at a flea market. I asked if they were temptations and the vendor said yes. I remember them being more substantial than the first ones I purchased a few years ago.

The muffin baker is OW spice and the other 2 are FL I got a blue one and a cranberry. They are made in China but they dont say Temp tations.

Thanks. I'll have to check there. FL is my favorite. I'd much rather pick pieces out in person.

Old Time Pottery has the same thing but they aren't marked Temptations ~ I assume since they are liquidators they buy overstock. One time I did see at a yard sale a lady was selling lots of Temptations - I did buy a piece to serve with.

(My older pieces from the first time Temptations was presented have never had any problems like I've seen over the past few years.)

If they don't say Temp-tations then it's not Temp-tations...simple. A while back a poster said that there were some stoneware that looked like TT but it was a ""knock off"". NO ONE has a patent on dishes that happen to ""look like"" another. Recently a poster said that there was stoneware on another shopping channel with stoneware that resembled TT.

Many times QVC will say something is exclusive to them. Sometimes it's the color or the configuration of a product that makes it exclusive. A variation of the same product can be purchased elsewhere. The company making the product will sell it under several difference brand names, and slightly change something, but for the most part it is still the same product.

I used to have some TT stuff, but I sold mine at a yard sale. The chicken canisters, the cake plate/appetizer thing, and a chicken roaster, I guess it's called. Oh, and some kind of casserole set. The couple who bought them were very happy to get the pieces....I sold everything for one price (I think it was $10 for everything....not very expensive because, to me, it's junk) and they took it all. I think they hadn't been married very long and they were probably happy to get stuff for their kitchen. These pieces were given to me and I didn't trust them to not crack. I've often wondered, since all the comments about cracking and breaking, if those pieces held up, especially the casseroles.

I do have a salad bowl with five matching smaller bowls. It's very pretty and I kept that. We use it from time to time, but only for salads. I'd never put anything hot in it, even though it's an older set, before all the complaints about cracking and such. It's done in red, yellow, and green. One bowl has a cheese wedge, one bowl has olives, another bowl has basil springs, and so on. That set is very nice. I'm not sure, but maybe that's called Cucina? I'm not sure.

SInce what you bought did not have Temp-tations logo on the bottom. it is not Temp-tations. There have been "knock offs" before of this line & another poster stated that the other shopping channel has a line of bakeware that looks "exactly" like TT. Common for this to happen in a popular line such as Temp-tations. If you like it get it!! Not sure why I would or anyone would feel "lied" to?

If you really think about it, Tara did not invent anything original in bakeware. There is another post in which I list extensively the other companies through time who had baking systems with rack, lids, etc. going back to the 40's and 50's with Pyrex Corningware, and others. I listed brands and places that have items almost identical to hers.

If anything, the Temp-tations line has copied systems and patterns and designs very closely from things done much earlier. What she and Q have done is come up with an extremely effective marketing strategy that sells products similar to others (some of the exact same sets on ShopHQ just painted differently) out there on the market. At best Tara and the TT team had some hand in designing or choosing what a factory could offer of a color and pattern scheme, but there is very little original here.

What I ask myself is, do I like the look? Will it coordinate with things I have? Is the price worth the quality (no, not all the time, but their CS does pretty good standing behind the product)?

My main reason for collecting is I have found no other line that offers so many different pieces, for that completely matched/coordinated kitchen. I like being able to have everything from pie plate, to recipe box, to tableware, to silverware, to linens to match. TT has offered, over the years, more variety of accessories to match their main patterns than any other line I've seen, including Pfaltzgraff.

I understand how you feel, and my suggestion would be to look around and see what is out there before you purchase anymore. If you are doubting, or feel cheated, you may resent further purchases, and heavens knows, money doesn't grow on trees!

I don't know specifically about these items, but many, many imported items are mass produced overseas and then bought, branded, marketed, and distributed by various companies under various names. This is true of some imported home décor items, dishes, garden ornaments, etc. It is entirely possible that you are seeing earthenware pieces made in the same factories in the same designs as Temp-tations, exactly like Temp-tations, but just not branded and sold under the Temp-tations label. And if so, the quality is probably no better and cracking/breakage problems no less, either.

Okay maybe I shouldn't feel,lied to but I have shopped with QVC since Kathy Levine & Bob Bowersox presented a show together. (years ago) I have a lot of faith in the company and when they says a product is exclusive to them. I think it should be! I shouldn't be able to walk into a store and find it on their shelves!

You are a long time Q shopper! I think back in the day, before internet shopping and such, Q did have exclusive lines, and everything was made better than we are getting today.

I've notice over the years (I go back to watching Q a little over a decade, anyway), they have had to change the mantra a little bit. They still use the word exclusive with some brands or lines, but will now say that this color is exclusive, or this line is exclusive until (fill in some date), or this is our house or proprietary brand. And brand is just that. A name on something that is often manufactured for many companies, then given a brand mark and color or pattern that makes it look slightly different, than the other hundred "brands" just like it going out to other vendors.

It is amazing how those of us who are a little older can remember a day when a brand was important, because it had a history, and a quality, not just a good marketing team. You bought the same brand your parents and grandparents had used, and the quality was consistent over the decades. No more. Many of the brand we grew up with and that were domestic produced fine quality, last for generation names, have now been bought up by one large international company, and are being manufactured cheaply (not to be confused with inexpensive) over seas. One example, World Kitchens, has bought out brands like Pyrex, Corelle, Corning, Chicago Cutlery, Bakers Secret, and I thought at one time, even Revere and Farberware had been under their umbrella. Some lines still have some products manufactured here, many not.

I think the feeling that you've been lied to, at least for me, is because the hosts and vendors still present these products or others like them, and hearken back to those days of trust in products and brands, and we buy into the idea that we will be purchasing that same quality and history. They tend to do this with TT, a relatively new brand, by repeating how "our grandmothers and their grandmothers cooked with ceramic/stoneware". They sure did, but a whole different breed. Domestic made, heavy, and would last for decades.

I guess it is up to us to see this is not our grandmother's stoneware, and decide is it of value to us, based on the cost, the length of time it will last, and the pleasure we do (or don't because of problems with it) get out of using the product.

I feel your frustration. I look at things made today and shake my head. I would gladly pay more for shoes, clothing, linens, kitchen wares, that matched the quality of my grandmothers day. We do a lot of thrift store, auction, garage sale shopping to find the old stuff, some of it used for generations and still better than anything on the shelf today, to get that quality.

I went yesterday. Mine did not have any but they had tons of beautiful bakeware from Italy. They even had a few pieces I thought looked just like one of the patterns Doris Roberts presented. They were very inexpensive and I recall the ones on qvc were quite pricy.

There's a local chain of stores in NJ - Buddy's Small Lots. I was there yesterday and they had an entire wall of Temp-tations (they said 'Temp-tations on the bottom)!! They must have bought out a ton from QVC.
