LOL!!

That's me. I run it every day because I don't want nasty stuff sitting there. It may be a quick wash, but it runs--and yes, I've been known to start loading it the next morning without unloading! Now I will say that did happen more when I worked.

How about you? Do you follow "the rules" of dishwashing? Or are you a rebel?

I run my dishwasher an average of twice a day with at least four days a week of running it three times. Everything goes in mine. I have All-Clad pans, Wustoff knives, and wooden utensils. I bought my All-Clad before I was married 22 years ago and it has survived just fine.

I used to put everything in the dishwasher. Until I ruined a beautiful Japanese wooden cutting board. The dishwasher messed up the finish of the wood. I also messed up my carbon steel knives too.

But I like everything, except pots and pans, to go in the dishwasher. I like the Sani Cycle. No bacteria or virus can survive all that steam.

My cousin had an additional dishwasher added to her remodeled kitchen. So there would always be a dishwasher with clean dishes. It was her husband's idea. Since the unloading of the dishwasher somehow became his job.

We run ours once a day. I don't like having dishes sitting in there, even though we rinse them well. But we would not normally run it more than that.

My husband is into high-quality knives, so no, they get washed by hand. And I would never put any wooden item in the dishwasher. Almost everything else that will fit goes in.

@skatting44 We recently had to buy a new dishwasher as the almost 20 year old version we had started to have electrical failures, and that was a seriously fire-dangerous situation! We looked at many brands, read reviews, and went to our locally owned independent appliance store to purchase. My DH was in love with a Bosch model that has an in-machine water softener in it, because we have super-hard water, so although it does not have the individual water spigots I wanted for washing tall items, I agreed to it.

My "review" is that the water softener is a pain to fill, but I no longer have any water spotting on my dishes, they are squeaky-clean and shiny. The motor is VERY strong, I usually run the "delicate" cycle so that my plastic storage containers don't get thrown around and left right side up to collect dirty water for the rest of the cycle! Even on the "delicate" setting the dishes get perfectly clean. Oh, and the machine is too smart for it's own good, it is always monitoring itself and telling me to "add salt" (water softener) or "add rinse aide", which I fill with de-mineralized water because I hate having a chemical residue on my dishes, I want them clean, sanitized and soap-free, not coated with something slimy. The water softener keeps the spots away by itself, it doesn't need a rinse aide. Another benefit is that it really is a very quiet dishwasher, which is nice in an "open concept/great room" floor plan. I still miss those dedicated water spigots, but otherwise the Bosch is a heckuva good dishwasher.

If you have stoneware dishes and don't wash much plastic ware, you'd be fine with the regular cleansing cycle, I suspect you could put in dishes that food had dried on or coated with egg yolk and they'd still get clean! This machine's motor and pump are almost industrial-strength.

@skatting44 I LOVE my Bosch! It is whisper quiet, in fact it has a tiny red light at the bottom corner to reflect on the floor to let you know it is running as you can't hear it. The racks are designed really well, makes it very easy to load. Now I know why many of my friends throughout the years have loved theirs. One note, at least as of 2 years ago when we purchased ours, Bosch doesn't offer a drying element, the items air dry within the unit. Using Cascade everything comes out spotless and dry except for some plastic pieces like Locknlock. I either hand wash or take those out after running the dishwaser and dry on a mat. We live in very dry Colorado, anything here takes about a minute to dry lol.

I pretty much wash my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher.

There's a reason why. Because I don't make very many dirty dishes. I don't like the thought of them sitting in the dishwasher with food on them.

The smell is gross when I open it. I usually only have to wash the dishes once every 5 or 6 days.

I have put Chicago Cutlery wooden handle knives into dishwasher for 40 years. They are just fine. My old dishwasher had a quick rinse cycle, my new one doesn't. So I wait until its full to run. I lay the big bread knives and chef's knives flat on the top shelf. I see them immediately and don't get cut this way.
