Disposing of knives

What is the best way to dispose of big knives? I replaced my old knife set last year and need to get rid of the old knives. I have about six of them and they are big, and I don't know what happened to the block they were in. I don't feel comfortable just tossing them in the trash can for the garbage men to potentially stab themselves with them. No one wants them. Any ideas?

Mine have been more sporadic when disposed, but they have always just migrated to the garage or shed for a second life. Useful things.

Right or Wrong - this is what I've done. Same as you afraid trash people will get injured so........I wrap each knife in newspaper - many sheets - then wrap the bundle with tape to secure. If I have bubble wrap - add that - and dispose in the trash.

Husband left me hunting knives and I, too, replaced some old ones.

Are the old knives still usable? If so, why not donate them? Whether you donate them or throw them away, I like the recommendation to wrap them in newspaper.

If they are still good, instead of throwing them away, donate them. There are all sorts of organizations that need household items for those that can't afford them.

I guess I'd do the same thing I do for broken glass, put into a couple grocery bags before going into the trash. I've never gotten rid of a knife, ours go to auction or donation.

If you can’t recycle or donate, I cut a heavy piece of corrugated cardboard and fold it in half and place the blade of the knife inside the cardboard with the sharp edge facing the folded edge and then wrap a lot of duct tape around the whole thing so it can’t slip out of the cardboard and stab anyone when in the garbage.

I would just wrap them up in bubble wrap with strapping tape.

Garbage men don't open trash bags. they are swept into their trucks "dumpster" at each stop.

I keep an old knife to open boxes from amazon.

@ECBG Our garbage bags are picked out of our bin and hand thrown into the back of the truck. So even though they don't open the bags, they pick them up and carry them.

I had a few large and small knives that I no longer needed so I just wrapped them very well. First i put them in a cardboard sleeve and then bubble wrapped them individually.

On the package I wrote in large letters "caution, sharp knives".

I then donated them to our local Salvation Army. The knives were still in good shape so I didn't want to just take them to the garbage dump.

@morganjen - My Dad taught me many years ago that if a knife did not come with a sheath to make one out of cardboard, tape the one long end and one short end and slide the knife it. I do that when I need to dispose of a knife so the blade is not exposed.

I'd fold a piece of cardboard over the blade and wrap it with tape. Toss in my trash bag.

I like using old knives, in the flower gardens, and getting to weeds, they come in handy.

i highly recommend the service KNIFE AID. i first saw them on shark tank and gave them a try. WOW, did they do a fantastic job of taking very dull knives and making them sharp again. it is all done via usps. they can even fix tips of knives also.

will be sending in another batch soon. the first batch of knives were cutco from the 1950s! they are miracle workers. lol

My garbage men pick up the bags out of my bin. So they could get cut if things were not wrapped or wrapped badly. You need a box cutter for opening boxes. They are much more effective than old, dull knives.

Why discard them? Donate them to Goodwill.
