My over the oven one died back several months ago and I also got a GE replacement from Best Buy and had them install it. Geez, the installation and the haul away cost almost as much as the microwave. When this one goes I'm going to leave it up for decoration and get a small countertop one.

All the bells and whistles work, but it no longer heats! I never realized until I couldn't heat up a cup of teat (in chock, actually tried 4x) and then in panic mode got out the laptop to check out microwaves.

How am I going to feed Eddy? How am I going to re-heat my coffee? and make tea? were the thoughts whick kept going thru my mind.............

Then a friend called me telling me of her good news. After the niceties, I let her know my microwave died!!! She then was in shock and dismay also, as how can anyone function without the beloved microwave!

And, out of necessity, I finally calmed down. I realized Eddy and I will survive, quite well, without this appliance. I got out the hotshot to make my tea. I can keep my morning coffee warm using an insulate cup (than you ITKWD!). Yesterday I made supper for me and Eddy (he gets 'people food' with his kibble); and since it was a outside working morning, heated last nite's leftovers in the toaster oven for me and Eddy. At first I was wondering how am I going to steam vegetables. Then realized I can steam them in that fifth-burner pot (thank you MCM).

I now realize I don't need a microwave - let alone go thru the time and expense of buying a new one and having it installed (over range type). Years ago when on my own, I had no microwave (they probably weren't even invented When married, still no microwave - and I cooked very well! So I decided not to replace this appliance. .I now realize there are soooo many gadgets we all have and really don't need (at least I don't). (I must confess I have one small and two large countertop models upstairs and downstairs, but I'm really gonna try to go back to the 'old days' and live without the microwave.

P.S. Do they still sell Jiffy Pop? i can't remember how to make popcorn on a stove??!!??

Goldenlocks - I bet I am going to be in the same boat you are shortly.

My microwave is 30+ years old. It is a Tappan. I haven't seen that brand in ages.

The microwave still works like a champ. But I keep thinking one of these days, it won't. I remember my Mom replacing her microwave every 5 or so years. So I figured I would keep using mine. It did everything I wanted in a microwave.

Yes, they still sell Jiffy Pop. We bought it about a month or so ago.

I hear you, I really didn't know how much I used my microwave till mine died last spring. And of course it was at a time when Amazon was slower than usual. I freeze a lot, and so defrosting sauce and soups is what I use it for, and the occasional Lean Cusine, not to mention vegetables. I was so happy to finally get a new one.

I had a real scare today- thought my fridge died! Thankfully, it seems to be back down to the proper temp. When calling around to the large appliance stores I have used in the past, they said fridges are backordered until the end of the month as a result of Covid-19 production and shipping delays. I only found one smaller appliance store that was selling what was on the floor and they are getting limited stock. What comes in goes right out in short order. I just had to replace a fridge 3 summers ago in my previous house. Hoping not to spend that kind of $ again anytime soon. I have no idea how old my present unit is- it came with my house.

My microwave died a couple months ago. I use it just for basics like you do - make tea, defrost, warm up meals, etc. but I knew I would miss it. So I bought a lower end GE replacement from Best Buy and had them install it. I’m back in business and happy with it.

My microwave stopped working properly about 2 years ago. We had a power surge and boom the display pad got crazy

🤷‍♀️

The clock/timer feature and certain buttons don't work...but, I am just letting it sit above the range because I want different brand appliances in SS. I know the range & dishwasher are next ...so I'm patiently waiting for them to go🤞🏻

The fridge is 3 years old crappy Samsung ice maker stopped working at 13 months and compressor sounds like it's

next...ugh...I'm making ice cubes in trays like when I was a kid🙄

I'm not fixing them or buying new until they all go! I never used microwave much except for popcorn so no biggie.

BTW, those microwave bagged vegs I do the good ole fashioned way a little boiled water, salt, drop in vegs, cover...steam.

Or I buy the really old fashioned kind in bags by PicSweet or other brand.

@eddyandme

We have 2 micro-waves, one above the stove that I can barely reach. I am short and a couple of years ago when I broke my ankle my husband bought a counter top one, I have a large kitchen so we bought a cart. Microwave sits on the top and beneath we use it for storage. I don't use it an awful lot but they are nice to have when you want them. I use mine for popcorn, cooking frozen veggies, melting butter or just reheating stuff. We have had one since the mid 90's and not sure I would know what to do without one.

I was reminded today how important the microwave is for making Reuben sandwiches, a favorite. I preheat the sauerkraut and meat or beets when I'm making it vegetarian in the microwave, then I build the sandwich and the preheating helps the cheese melt easier while the sandwich grills on the stove or in the Foodi.

Just a quick note. When a microwave dies, it's typically a blown fuse. Replacing the fuse is something a homeowner can do if they're careful. There are roughly a gazillion websites, YouTube videos, and online instructions on how to do it.
