I had half of a loaf of home made wheat bread this morning and was OUT of bird seed! It is bitter cold and there is snow on the ground. WHAT to do! I made them some pb sandwiches (left the jelly off); made them a bag of popcorn, and threw out some pecans and walnuts. Not a crumb of anything was left when I got home tonight! LOL!!!

Reminded me of our recent thread and thanks for the idea for pb for a buffet! Who knew how popular it would be?

when we were kids i remember we would gather pine cones off of the ground and then spread peanut butter all over them and then dip them in birdseed or sunflower seeds. they were then hung on trees outside the kitchen window so we could bird watch!

i often throw out the stale pieces of bread or crackers, leftover rice, popcorn for the birds AND the squirrels.

On the same topic, for those of you dealing with snow and bitter weather, I heard that it's a good idea to throw your dryer lint out on the snow. The birds use it to build nests when they can't find their usual building materials.

There were some poor deer in my backyard yesterday and I felt so bad for them. It must be lean pickings this time of year. I threw out some baby carrots, some seeds, nuts and the remainder of a bagged salad. It's all gone so somebody or something must have eaten it.

My daughter made two snowmen the other day with all the snow we have hanging around here. She decided she wanted to use Oreo cookies for the eyes, carrots for the noses, pretzel rods for the arms, and cranberry raisins for the mouth. In the morning, I noticed her snow men were no longer decorated -- I'm guessing the deer that was wandering in the street one house over earlier this week was the culprit. Unusual snack for a wild animal!

That PB was probably much needed protein for the birds! I can't feed the critters outside here, because we get unwelcome guests! Good job, Sooner, (I hope no birds went into anaphylactic shock!)

Sooner:

I used to feed birds and came across advice that one shouldn't feed bread to birds. They say it doesn't provide them enough nutrition always to stay warm at night and so they could freeze. I didn't know about that before that time.

They love the PB, don't they? How sweet! I've been filling up a small hanging feeder almost daily, only since the the temps have gotten REAL cold. I love watching our feathered friends! At times, it seems that I may be the main food source. Besides the finches, the other day, I saw a bluejay and a bright red cardinal (the female is also around at times) sitting right next to each other.....so nice to see. Then there's the small downey woodpecker that goes only to the suet, ground-feeding doves. When I have any other crackers, bread, dried fruit, nuts, etc. I always keep them in mind....enjoy wildlife year round, but especially at this time of the year.

We have 3 different sized hawks that frequent our yard during extreme weather and that medium sized one dives right into the shelter of the bushes after "my birds". I go out with a pot and spoon and scare the liven daylights out of him. Those hawks can hunt their prey somewhere else. They think it's a feast of birds for them here and easy hunting. Not on my watch it is. Of course I don't know how many they get when I am not at the window watching. I bet the neighbors call me "that crazy bird lady" when they hear me beating the pan.

We have dozens of birds - cardinals, jays, wrens, red wing blackbirds, sparrows, doves, turtledoves, brown thrashers, chickadees, nuthatches and more. We've had four feeders out back for years, and we seem to have the same guys every year. The woodpeckers (five different kinds including the big Pileated guys) seem to stay all year. They eat tons of suet, which is pretty inexpensive, but I still plan to begin making my own. I have six crows that come every morning about 6:30. They get bread with peanut butter and if we have any leftovers that won't hurt them, they get that, too. They hang out in the trees around the house and scream at me whenever I go outside. They're like the jesters of the bird world. They find plenty of carrion during the day because we're near the river, several hundred acres of woods, and the Interstate isn't far away,

A dozen or more squirrels come each day for peanuts. One in particular has become very tame - he makes a world of noise outside the office door when he comes so he can have peanuts.

Lately, there have been hawks hanging around, so the squirrels stay under cover - an awning, the rose garden, benches, etc. We also have a pair of bald eagles that soar around - they live atop some nearby power transformers. There are also lots of owls that stalk for rabbits at night, and many seabirds and cranes that drift in. Sometimes a peacock. We really enjoy the wildlife.

When you add in the coons, opossum, armadillos, bobcats, alligators and nutria rats, it's pretty active around here. So fences are a real necessity to keep your cherished "critters" safe.

If squirrels are a problem and if it's feasible, try adding some cayenne pepper to the peanut butter. The birds don't even notice it, but the squirrels hate it. I sometimes have to put cayenne pepper on my suet cakes, if I've forgotten to buy the hot pepper cakes. Otherwise, the squirrels will devour the suet cakes in no time. I love feeding the birds, and don't mind the squirrels….as long as they're good about sharing!
