Wooden Salad Bowl Set

I don't have one, yet I eat salads all the time. Although I do live by myself, I'm thinking of getting a large acacia wood salad bowl w/utensils and 4 matching round bowls. I think it might be something I'd get a lot of use with in the long run.

I'm sure a lot of you have a set such as this. Do you enjoy it? Use it often? Does the wood hold up?

I like to have a matching set and they run all over the place in prices.

I have a big wooden bowl but never use it. I vastly prefer with my beautiful, decorative turquoise glass bowl or a brushed stainless contemporary bowl. I find the wooden bowl a nuisance to clean and care for and I can store leftovers in my other bowls. The wood bowl is too big for salad for one person and it takes up a lot of shelf space.

Agree with K-624 - more bother than worth - especially for one. Have to - hand wash - hand dry - oils from last salad difficult to remove (impossible).. Then space to store big bowl. Had a set - big bowl too small amount for 4 people.

Glass in dishwasher the greatest!

Not a good thing. Think about it, would you use a wooden cutting board for all your meat? They absorb things.

Not to say that a nice bowl can't be used for other things.

Years ago I had a nice wooden bowl set from Philippines. Used it for five years; gave it away when I moved ( it was a pain to keep up).

Hmmmm, glad I asked. I like the sound of @Kachina624 turquoise glass bowl. Then of course there are the pretty little salad dishes for the various Holidays.

Maybe I should do a little bit more looking around. I got the idea because Nordstrom's is going to be having their Anniversary sale, and I noticed a large wooden salad bowl with the utensils will be on sale for $39.90 or so. It doesn't come with the matching bowls. That's what started me looking.

Guess I'll keep looking at things. Thanks everyone.

Wooden salad bowl set? That's so 1970. Or something you would get as a wedding gift. Just use whatever you have. Letttuce doesn't need a fancy bowl. As you said, it's only for your use, not for company.

I had a wooden salad bowl set some years ago, but much prefer one of my pretty crystal or glass bowls. They're much easier to clean and store. I never liked the small individual wood bowls - too small and they always seemed to be either greasy or somewhat sticky even though I thought I cleaned them really well. I have 4 individual white pasta bowls from Pier 1 that we always use for salads. Perfect size and they go right into the dishwasher after use!

I too eat salads daily & had to laugh when I read "wooden salad bowl set"!! As someone else mentioned this is vintage!! Funny! The steak house we went to as family had wooden salad bowls. So yesterday.

Salad is tasty no matter what bowl. Beautiful dishes are nice. Wooden bowls, not so much anymore. One poster mentioned they are hard to keep clean.

I have a big wooden salad bowl I got, oh, at least 40 years ago. It's been in heavy use at times, in storage a few times, used for decorative purposes now and then, taken to potlucks and picnics, used to collect veggies from my garden, and almost given away a couple of times. It's carved from a piece of maple and unfinished, so it has changed color over the years. I don't wash it with anything strong--often just water and a quick dry. Once, when it came out of storage I had to give it a hard scrub, but that was just one time. Oh, and I use lemon juice to clean it if I have any protein in it. The bowl looks used and loved, and I like it that way myself. No question about it holding up!

I like to make my salad dressing right in the bottom of the bowl, usually just oil and vinegar and herbs. Then I add everything but the greens and let it marinate a bit, then add greens. So the oil from the dressing has slowly percolated into the wood, making the inside center smoother and darker than the rest. I used to have wooden bowls to eat from, and I don't know what I did with them, but I seldom used them since I prefer a plate for salad.

Yes, get your bowl(s), use them fully and enjoy them!

@jellyBEAN - I have one with matching bowls. I use the little bowls every time we have salad with dinner, which is about 3-4 times a week! I use the big one when we have a special dinner or for other purposes. I have the matching serving utensils too. Those I don't use much, but I use them some.

I've had this set since we were married. I don't baby it at all. The only thing I do is hand wash and dry right away. The salad dressings through the years have helped make the inside of the bowls really nice!

@jellyBEAN I think your idea of a wooden salad bowl sounds great! When I think of a wooden salad bowl I always think of times when I have been at really nice restaurants and had a Caesar Salad made at our table. I can't say we have done that a lot, but it definitely has left an impression with me. I never thought the salad dressing would season the wood, but I learn something every day.

I love my large Fiesta bowl and use that quite often for large salads. QVC sells the bowl I am talking about. It is Item H338591. There is also an extra large bowl which is Item H338549. As far as individual bowls, I use the Fiesta medium bowl. It is Item H338483. I use that bowl for salads and soup! My personal preference is the Turquoise color. It goes with so much.

Got a beautiful set as a wedding gift 40 years ago. Beautiful it was, I left it out and used it as decoration only.

Practically speaking I must prefer something I can throw in the dishwasher if I want too.

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Tokyo for 5 years, about 40 years ago.

My Aunt would buy beautiful handmade gifts. One of the gifts was a wooden salad bowl set. I forgot what type of wood it is. But the way it was carved and the grain of the wood, the set is a work of art.

I have never used it. But it has to be one of the nicest bowls I own.

I have one-rectangular wooden bowl plus 4 individual bowls - that I received as a wedding gift 1974!

I used it for many years and has held up well but now I like glass bowls. Easier and more sanitary.

I gave an expensive walnut one away years ago.

H293401 For a salad bowl I prefer a shallower bowl that is not rounded but is wider and flatter. I build salad pretty much in layers so that people can serve with tongs and grab a bunch digging all the way down to the bottom of the bowl.

That way all the heavier ingredients don't get worked to the bottom and everybody gets some of all the salad ingredients. It is shaped like the bowl in the pasta set H293401.

For the two of us, I often use a Butterfly Garden by Lenox bowl that is about 8 or 9 inches.

Back in the 70s as a wedding showing gift, I got a glass salad bowl with serving spoon & fork, from Princess House. I used that alot for when having guests & holiday dinners.

After I married, I got a salad bowl set from Tupperware. I loved that piece and used it often; if not using it for toss salads, I also used it for furit salads, cut up melons and taking pasta salads to picnics or outdoor parties. The Tupperware came with matching bowls with lids.

I have a beautiful hand carved salad bowl set. If you don't mind hand washing, I love it!
