Meat, shortage or glut?

I've heard on various news broadcasts that there is a shortage due to hoarding. Then a day later I hear there's a glut due to slowing restaurant demand. Well, two markets in my area, upper midwest, only got the shortage memo. Ground round was up about 1.00 a lb. and ground sirloin was up 3.00 a lb. Are you noticing variances where you shop, and what area of the country are you in?

I reside in Georgia, Columbus to be specific.

I have not seen any shortage of meat, I do my shopping at the Commissary. The pricies are the same as before COVID-19.

There's plenty of meat that farmers and ranchers would love to get rid of. The problem is they can't find processors to butcher it for sale. Meat packing plants have closed or are working with reduced crews due to illness from the virus. That's what's causing the shortage. In places where grocers have connections, there seem to be plenty of meat.

The grocery stores in my area have stated that you can only purchase 2 or three purchases of meat (deli, bacon, chicken, beef, etc) per visit to the store. I am in the Midwest as well.

I have seen different items unavailable in different stores too.

I'm in the mountns of NC. We haven't had any sirloin steak for about 2 months maybe. I love to make stir fry with that cut.

They're limiting us to 2 pkgs of each kind of meat as well.

I was also worried about a shortage and ordered over $500 worth of meat from an indepdendent distributor that normally sells to restauarants but due to the economic catastrophe now sells directly to consumers. It wasnt cheap but now I am stocked through summer with a full freezer. It wasnt worth the gamble when I heard about the pork processing plants experiencing shut downs due to the Virus. If you are willing to pay a little extra you will have no trouble finding restaurant qualirty meats. I try and stay ahead of the curve when it comes to shortages.

@Reever - Meat has a shelf life even in the freezer. If it is just you at home, you might not get through all that meat before it goes bad.

Might depend on the kind of meat you want. My neice took over the family meat market a few years ago. Some customers were asking about "local" beef. She explained that they sell only prime or choice and the local herds are holsteins (dairy) which do not provide prime or choice quality.

Several years ago my brother raised his own beef cattle for the business but there was no interest in it at the time. .

Yes meats for sure!

This week our store had ground beef. I like 80/20 not available but sirloin was $6.99/lb. They can keep it!!!

Chicken thighs were $2.89/lb., breasts were $5.99/lb and drumsticks were $3.59/lb. They certainly can keep them!

Pork chops were $4.99/lb for boneless and $4.29/lb for bone-in.

I saw eye round roast for $7.99 and chuck roast 7.99. C'mon these prices are outrageous just a few months ago prices were $3/lb less🤔. I'll buy at Costco or Sam's OR not at all.

I also noticed today a lb. of butter was $5.89 for Land o Lakes (minus the indian woman☹️) and reddi-whip my spouse fav was $5.59 a can...I didn't buy either!

Potatoes $5.99 for 5 lbs. forget about produce it's pricey too!!!

In fact, gone are the good sale prices on anything and BOGOs when at a time we could really use it!

Wow! I bet those prices won't go down any time soon or at all after this over.

Anyone remember the drought in the mid-west when ranchers were selling their cattle. Prices went sky high then. When the rain fell, herds replenished, the prices didn't come down.

I live in the upper part of Michigan. We have an abundance of local farmers. They can't seem to keep their products on the shelves! Their businesses are absolutely BOOMING with curbside pickup (or instore shopping). I just picked up my annual meat/poulty sampler and I'm set for awhile. Support your locals ladies!

There as been a shortage of meat here in my area of NC since the pandemic began.

The shortage of meat is not due to lack of meat, its due to lack of being able to process it to get it to the markets, supposedly due to workers being ill with Covid19.

That is quite a lot of meat at one time. I guess you have an extra freezer and a Foodsaver? We looked for a stand alone freezer a few months ago, and they are sold out here.

@qbetzforreal If Reeve has a FoodSaver and took the time to vacuum seal all of it or if the processor vacuum sealed it, it should last a lot longer. We're still working on a partial cow from last year my husband went in on with some friends. Everything except the ground beef the processor vacuum sealed.

Local store had a sale on T bone steaks. Hoarders took them all

sign said 'no rain checks'.

there you go . We and a bunch of others turned around and left the store.

Don't know why they didn't put a limit on them . If you don't limit the selfish grab every one of them they don't care. People with unlimited credit I guess, stock their carts with 20 packs or more. Had to had been 200.00 or more. They will probably come back for more if they have another sale.

No shortage here in Ohio. The only time shelves were bare was when they annouced there would be a meat shortage on the news. Some people ran out and filled up their carts like they did with toliet paper.

They have a limit now and there is plenty.

ABC news just reported about food prices going up. I didn't get the whole thing, but I think he said it had gone up 2.5 percent in the last month. The highest percentage in the last 50 years. Maybe someone else was watching closer than I was and can clarify.

I'm in Arkansas, yesterday when I went to Wal Mart, I thought there were several price increases. Toilet paper here has definitely gone up. The only meat I bought was some all beef hot dogs and a package of those was nearly 5 bucks. I never buy hot dogs so I'm not sure if thats an increase or not, seemed expensive to me. I think eggs have gone up too. If it all hasn't gone up, its only a matter of time, I think.

We have a foodsaver, money well spent. We just had a prime rib roast that has been in the freezer almost 3 years and it was just as fresh as the day it was packed.
