After using I clean with hot water scrape out any food with wooden utensil. I place in hot oven to dry then rub with oil and place back in hot oven to cure.
I oil pan w paper towel and place back in hot oven to cure.
I don’t want it to rust and so far this has been successful.
When I oil the pan I notice my paper towel is black (iron?)
Is this black normal to come off, how do you clean and store.
Thanks

I thought I read that they need to be oiled so they don’t rust and “seasoned”

How to "season" your cast-iron pan:

First, using a paper towel, coat the pan with a neutral oil like canola or vegetable oil (including the bottom and handle of the pan).

Then bake upside down in the oven at 350 degrees F for 1 hour (line the rack below with foil to catch any oil drips). This will protect the surface and give it an almost nonstick quality.

Turn off the oven and let the pan cool in the oven before touching.

How to maintain your cast-iron pan in the future:

Whenever you use your cast-iron pan, just rinse it with warm water--don't use soap--and make sure to dry it really well (wipe it out or set it over low heat for a while). This will keep it seasoned and prevent rusting.

I have one of my mom's and a much newer one too.

Now that mine are seasoned I don't take much real care of them. If they are going into the oven I will put a coating on the outside too, if I think of it.

They don't really need oil on the inside each time.

This morning I did eggs and put to soak while I ate, yada yada, several hours later there it was. But no harm done. Other than my mom is going to kill me when we meet in heaven.

It does take a bit to whip them into shape at first. I saw you have noticed the black, yes they do. Just keep them away from the good dish towels.

I either do that in the oven, or even stove-top. That prevents rust, but that's another advantage to cast iron: you can scrub off that rust with just about anything, and re-season if you need to.

I only have one cast iron pan, but love how I can use any utensil on it lol--and nothing beats cast iron for grilled cheese, or even re-heating pizza.
