Another Odd Shortage

So, last week it was Tater Tots. Who knew? There's still a shortage of flour although you can find self-rising. I do have to wonder if a lot of used bread machines will become available after this.

This week I noticed a shortage of spray oil. I hadn't noticed it before. There are a few, like PAM, but I don't want propellants and I was really wanting Grapeseed Oil. I guess that shows the popularity of Air Fryers.

Tater tots and french fries were hard to find in the beginning, but I've seen them at Kroger and Publix. I too hard a difficult time finding Pam. I was so low, I ended up buying 4 large cans on Amazon. But I was at Kroger a couple of days ago and Target over a week ago and they had plenty.

This is all kind of surprising.

it's like the whole nation during this gets the same cravings for things.

I don't know why but about a month ago, all of a sudden I thought, I really want some tater tots. I guess I was looking in the freezer section and thought of them but I never get them or think of them and sure enough there were none!

And flour. I guess people are thinking of baking. Just lots of comforting type foods that come to mind for so many I think.

@ScrapHappy I did find ONE bag of Tater Tots at my old Publix where my prescriptions still are after not finding any at Kroger or my new Publix last week. Neither Publix or Kroger currently have the spray oil. I may end up looking online if it stays out of stock.

The weird thing I can't find is split peas for soup. Had them on my lists as available for Publix and Walmart and then they're out of stock.

Can only assume everyone is making pea soup from their Easter ham.

Baking must be off the charts. A couple of weeks ago I was going to bake bread. The flour selections were sparse, but available, however could not find yeast, or even a boxed bread mix anywhere (went to 4 stores).

I noticed that, too. Items kids eat are flying off the shelves. Makes sense, though. Rice and boxed mac n cheese are hard to find. Hubs wants his favorite 'grab and go' warm up, lunch snack - chicken taquitos. Nope. I pick up groceries for son with smaller kids. Beef Hotdogs -- can't find. We're eating a lot of basil tomato soup with added steamed vegetables. I'm the only one who isn't tired of this meal. It could be so much worse. Thankful we aren't suffering.

the one item I wanted - haven't found each time I visited - yeast

I use yeast rarely - but I wanna make cinnamon buns - which I know is ultra ...

I did a major grocery stock up almost 4 weeks ago. The only thing that I had trouble finding was rice and I was perplexed as to why.

@Icegoddess - do you have one of the spray mister bottles they make for oil? I have one up in my cabinet I have never actually used but that might be an option. I got mine on Amazon. They can be used with any cooking oil and probably more cost effective in the long run.

It is odd to go through the grocery store and see totally random empty spots. Like no Campbell's chunky soup but lots of other kinds.

The rice area of local groceries has been pretty much wiped out for a couple of weeks. I've been going to at least one store, and often more per week and have noticed this.

I also noticed at Costco that one item on their posted list of things they won't accept for returns was........RICE.....right up there with paper towels and toilet paper.

One reason MIGHT be that a lot of small Chinese/Asian carryout restaurants buy their supplies from Costco stores. Their businesses are probably down, so the huge bags of rice that they buy are now going to waste in their storerooms.

Just a thought.....no proof that I'm right.

I'm heading out shopping Tuesday morning for the first time since the first, so it'll be interesting to see what's available. My Walmart has a special hour early opening on Tuesdays for those over 60 and I'm planning to be there about fifteen minutes after they open. I'll be there at 6:15 if things work out right, get what I need there, and then off to the Acme that opens at 7:00 for anything I couldn't get at Walmart. If things work out right, I should be able to get all I need for May and not have to venture out again.

I just ordered my first ever air fryer so I'll want to get some stuff to play around with that also. I ended up with the Yedi Total Package Air Fryer XL for $99. It's got great reviews and a two-year warranty, so I'll see how it works. It's scheduled to come on Tuesday, but my Amazon orders have been sneaking in a bit earlier, so we'll see what happens.

@ceekay I used to have a Pampered Chef one. They come with two spritzer nozzles. That should tell you something. Eventually, they get clogged and there doesn't seem to be a way to clear them.

The thing about rice is that it is a non-perishable. When all this started non-perishables flew off the shelves rice, soups, canned products. I couldn't even find grits. Frozen pizzas were another big seller. Of course there were the SNOW staples of milk, eggs, and bread. Bread is still pretty well cleaned out. It's available, I just cant get my favorite.

I worried about the eggs because DH eats them almost every morning, so eggs are always on my weekly list. But, even though we go through them quickly, I don't have the fridge space to store a lot of them, so not sure why people would hoard those. I did notice my Publix had Quail eggs available though. I guess they have always gotten lost amongst all those larger cartons of eggs because I have never seen them in the store before.

I can see them not wanting to take the rice back. If people are being irresponsible overbuying it is not the stores responsibility. A store taking back any food product must dispose of it. That is a loss for the store.

@gardenman : This week shopping at my Walmart- Price for 18 eggs increased a dollar. No butter. No Rice Krispies. No bread flour or yeast. The shelves for dish detergent, dish washer , cleaning supplies and any brand of wipes totally empty. No liquid soap or refill bottles of liquid soap and especially no hand sanitizer. Frozen vegetables picked over. Can goods very limited. We prefer the 29 ounce can of the pear halves can't find in stores or on line. Southern Bee

recently purchased tater tots, crinkle cut french fries, and hash browns from schwans home delivery.

have not looked for them in the grocery store.

I got a bag of tots yesterday. Always have tots on hand. Like to bake them until brown and crunchy and dip them in Boar's Head Chipotle Gourmaise. Had the supermarket bring it in on special order and now they stock it regularly. Very nom.

There was no flour and the beef was scarce and what there was was at least 30% pricier than it had been two weeks ago. Still, this store is better-stocked than it was a few weeks ago. All the cat food flavors I needed were there.

As long as there's Hellman's mayo, I'll survive.
