Aldis & avoiding 25 cent germs

I have sent an e-mail to thier corporate office from the contact site, but of course it takes several days to recieve a response.

Having plenty of time to dwell on the question , I was wondering about the quarter being passed thru the slot for the shopping cart. How does one avoid the dreaded covid 19 germs. I have been using disposable gloves when on my weekly shopping trip , carrying sanitizer and paper towels for the cart . I guess maybe holding a wipe to place the quarter in then one to remove ?

I have always liked shopping at Aldi's and never objected to the quarter deposit as it keeps prices down . But now---Just wondering .

All money is dirty and germy, doubt if the quarters are any more so. If you are wearing vinyl gloves it doesnt matter anyway. Covid is spread through liquid droplets so IMO unless someone sneezed on the quarter it should be safe. Just put your gloves on before you get out of your car.

If you wear gloves and don't touch your face, it should be fine. Using a wipe or paper towel/tissue would also be an added protection. Where would you dispose of the wipe?

This virus makes a person think and re-think every single move that used to seem normal. There is no way I would pass a quarter to a person to take their cart from where they are. I used to do this all of the time. Gloves are best I suppose.

One time I saw a young, able-bodied woman, leave her cart in the lot and get back in her car. I let her know that this was unacceptable Aldi behavior. There was another customer applauding me! I would totally let this go right now because of the viral fears.

Everybody leave the quarter where it is and all will be fine. I always thought that was a dumb thing for them to do anyway.

You get your quarter back when you return the cart. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t return it.

They don’t have to pay people to gather all the carts left in the lot.

touching the quarter is just like touching any money. It’s all filthy.

@SoonerMaybe a European thing? I definitely remember paying 25 cents for a bag to carry groceries back to our hotel - and that was nearly 20 years ago.

One thing I do know - that quarter means I don't see many carts in their parking lots nor many on the streets used as "housing" for all their possessions by the disenfranchised.

If it takes a quarter to do that much, I'd think it makes sense. Just last year when my LI country began requiring us to pay just 5 cents for a grocery bag (or really any bag), it took only a few weeks for people to learn to use less plastic. Money does have power!

@Sooner I thought of 'sacrificing' my quarter also . But that would not eliminate needing to get a cart to shop in upon arriving and taking out a 'touched by someone else' 25 cents. The germs last a while on metal .

I know many resent Aldi's asking for the quarter but I understand that it keeps carts from rolling around in lots . In certain urban areas the homeless roll carts away for storing thier items, or recyling metals, & various other purposes ending with stores not having carts.

@jpie where to dispose of wipes is a problem in some stores --- trash can ? hard to find one sometimes

WOW!!! ..Ive heard of places where they charge for the plastic bags, BUT a grocery cart deposit?????? Glad our grocery store chain doesnt do this....These days most customers take their own groceries out to their car instead of utlizing the baggers....so collecting the carts from the cart slots in the parking lot gives them something to do....from what one of the baggers told me.... Very few are left willy nilly out in the parking lot at the stores I shop at..... and as far as the homeless...they got chased away from the grocery stores.... a lot of people complained about them begging for money so stores took action....

@tucsongal The quarter is returned when you return the cart. No need to waste money paying someone to gather up all the carts left in the parking lot. In other words, you don’t pay for the use of the cart.

I don't understand the concern about the quarter. The quarter is not any germier than the shopping cart or anything else being touched.

It is my understanding that you use your quarter and get your quarter back.

Aldi’s carts are returned to a sheltered area at the door. No rusty carts, no wayward carts in the parking lot, no unhappy worker collecting carts.

You touch all kinds of stuff with germs when you are out. Just don't touch your face. Wash hands first thing when you get home. Put up your groceries & wash your hands again.

You put quarter in slot in cart to use it.

When you checkout they put your groceries in the cart of the person before you.

When finished you put that cart back outside in the rack. Once you push the lock in the next cart the quarter comes out the slot. You are touching several carts.

Some people that don't buy a lot don't use the carts. They put their groceries in bags or boxes while shopping.

Guess I don't worry about the quarter itself, because anytime I can (even wayyy before the coronavirus) I'd just pass my cart along to someone who drove in and parked near me. If they offered me a quarter, I'd suggest they pass it forward.

Now...since we can't find Purell or equivilent, we'll use alcohol & paper towels to push the cart. And return it if people are not willing. Hoping the next have Purell.

We’ve been shopping at Aldi a little more frequently lately as they have really upped their game in the produce department from what it used to be years ago. The store layout is much better than I recall too. Every time we go, we always find an abandoned cart. It’s like a treasure hunt for my husband. In fact, the other day I was pushing my cart back and a guy stopped like 2-3 feet from the cart area and left his there. Guess what, I put his back and got his quarter in addition to my own. My husband and I joke that being a self appointed Aldi lot attendant could be something for him to do in his retirement. He could easily clear $1.50 in a couple of hours and go to Costco for a hotdog. 😆

I always ask in these times to keep my same cart at checkout- no problem.

In addition I use an idea found on a Aldi lovers FB page: to bring a plastic laundry tote (NOT basket) and leave it in the cart. As the checker is chucking my items into my cart at warp speed the items go right into the tote, and I'm on my way to the exit , tote with groceries in hand. I also bring a Clorox wipe from home for the cart and have hand sanitizer in the car. So far, so good.

I should mention that I rarely buy more than I can fit in that one tote.

I did see someone at Home Depot sanitizing the carts yesterday when I picked up the shelves I ordered on line. No evidence of that at Aldi.

Excellent idea about the tote! We usually try to use empty boxes from the store and plastic bags for the rest, but NY just banned plastic bag use so now we're supposed to use the disease-carrying reusable shopping bags. We used to use Lysol on them in between grocery runs, but now it's impossible to find Lysol! I just pulled out all of the hard plastic/cardboard pieces from the bottoms of the reusable bags and washed them all yesterday, but what a pain! I really like your idea because a plastic tote will be much quicker/easier to load, carry into the house, and then sanitize!
