How did I not know that using PAM or other non stick sprays ruin non stick baking pans.

I was wondering why my banana bread was sticking on the bottom since I was using PAM and the pan was non stick.

The recipe I use said to spray the pan even if it is non stick....but it IS an old recipe..

I looked at Rachel Rays bakeware and I am probably going to replace mine now.....

I finally convinced my husband not to do this after almost threatening him if he kept it up. I lightly grease pans with butter or olive oil or I use parchment paper or the non stick aluminum foil. We've ruined a lot of non stick pans also with the spray.

I would never use PAM on top of the stove but I use it for baking all the time. The key is to make sure you get it all off when you clean it so it doesn't build up. As soon as the item is removed from the pan, the pan goes into the sink and I fill it to the brim with warm water and dish soap. I go over the edges with the sponge if the soapy water doesn't reach. Then I wait about five minutes and clean the entire pan.

What you shouldn't do is put your PAM-med pan in the dishwasher with any residual PAM on it. It will just bake on in there as the water spray will not remove it, then the heat will seal it on.

Using cooking spray (PAM is the most popular) is a surefire way to ruin your skillet’s nonstick coating. These products—essentially cooking oil in a can—are meant to make your pan’s surface nicely lubricated, but the problem is that oil isn’t the only ingredient. Cooking sprays also contain lecithin, which is an emulsifier, dimethyl silicone, which is an anti-foaming agent, and a propellant such as propane or butane.

Over time, the lecithin in the nonstick spray will cook onto the surface of your pan, build up, and become nearly impossible to remove. The result? See you later, skillet. The coating gets completely degraded from the spray and will no longer act as a nonstick surface.

Cookware manufacturers agree. “The use of cooking sprays is not recommended for use on non-stick cookware as cooking sprays burn at lower temperatures and will damage the non-stick coating of your product. An invisible buildup will impair the nonstick release system causing food to stick.”

~realsimple

Before I knew better, I ruined an electric waffle maker using PAM. Everything stuck to the waffle plates and I could never get the sticky, gunky coating off of them. The waffle plates weren't removable and I ended up having to dispose of it. I now just use butter or oil when necessary.

I have not had a problem using the actual Pam brand. It washes right off of my cookware. I did try using the store brands for a while thinking they were probably the same thing, but they did leave a sticky, unremoveable residue.

Wilton makes their own spray. You find it at Joann, Michaels, and many grocery stores. It's designed for bakeware and my cakes come out amazing. I have some very intricate pans, even 3 D and I always use this. It's nothing like Pam. As to the Wilton bakeware, it's very good provided you take care of it.

The pans should have “do not use cooking spray” printed on the bottom of the pan. I use parchment paper for baking and even spray it when making some things that are very sticky. I ruined a very good commercial-grade sheet pan by using spray on it. It was not nonstick, but the residue was impossible to remove. I still use it with parchment paper over the surface.

I just purchased a ceramic pan yesterday. I went to amazon to read the reviews. I did not buy it from amazon. In reading the reviews, the complaints were from people saying how they used PAM and it was the worst pan ever.

The good reviews talked about how they seasoned the pan and they love it. BUT, no one mentioned not to use PAM. I couldn't leave a review because I didn't buy it there. But boy I wish I could have told about how using PAM is not good.

I ruined our original wafflemaker of many years by using PAM on it. For our new wafflemaker, I use no oils on the wafflemaker. It has a non-stick surface, and waffles just pop out. The oil or butter in the recipes is enough for waffles to release.

For cookie sheets and cake pans, I line with parchment. I used some butter & flour. Muffins came right out. No sticking. All I had to do was wipe it out with wet paper towels.

I'm also replacing all my bakeware with USA Pan.
