@vickyh2 DH and I were just talking about that this weekend when we saw one for $49.99. It still wasn't tempting. Unless I was single, living in a small apartment, this would not be practical. Besides, how long would it be before the dog learns to open the trash can?? Can we say chicken bones?

Back in 2003, I bought one of the original Simple Human trash cans. I paid $179 for it, and it still works perfectly. Would I pay that much for one today? I doubt it.

Some people love gadgets and will pay any price. I love simple things that aren't electric-powered, are inexpensive, and that don't break.

I have a Simple Human garbage can in my kitchen. I bought it at Macy's many, many years ago when they were having a Friends and Family sale.

I wanted one, but since they are expensive, I waited to get one. I paid maybe $80 for it.

It was worth it. It still looks new 15 or more years later, washes up nicely, doesn't absorb odors and I can lock the lid if I have a dog who raids the trash.

I would buy another one to replace it, but don't think I will ever have to. It was a good purchase.

This same discussion was on the Boards over a year ago.

For some people, it is not the cost but the high quality and peace of mind.

I bought my SH can at BB&B almost 10 years ago (before QVC carried them), when my boy dog was tipping over the plastic cans, spilling everything and taking big bites out of the plastic. Yes, his teeth are that strong! He can chew through metal as well, but he cannot get a grip on this smooth exterior.

The S.H. can has been quite indestructible and I have certainly gotten my money's worth!

Going out on a limb, I believe they are thinking that they want to make a lot of money. I wouldn't spend that much either but it looks like they have some that cost more than that.

I have a sensor trash can that I bought a few years ago for $50 and I love it. The dog can't get into it as the sensor is on the top. No odor at all and looks good in the kitchen. I like it so much I purchased small ones for the bathrooms, neat and clean. Look around if your interested and you can get one for a much lower price. Batteries last a long time. If mine ever dies I will replace but not at the "sale price" of $99

I bought one a couple of years ago from Wayfair on sale.I felt guilty doing it but at the time it matched my stainless steel appliances perfectly.I also had plastic pails that just never lasted.

Anyway,I love it.It wears like iron & looks new.Very easy to clean. I buy the trash bags in bulk at Costco so there's no need to spend extra money on their replacement bags.

Stainless steel garbage cans will be high priced. Since this model has the magic feature of opening, thus the price. S&H is free. I have a stainless steel garbage can but I have had it over 15 maybe 20 years and it still looks good.

I bought a pop-up one 20 years ago - after fed up with the plastic one. Lost the rim to hold the liner so moved it to garage and bought a new one for the kitchen. They aren't that expensive if you shop around and I don't like Q's pushing a special liner. They last forever.....................

@vickyh2 . They're thinking Mrs. Housewife has a beautiful kitchen with granite countertops, stainless appliances, a big island and sparkling chrome plumbing fixtures. They conclude, rightly so, that she doesn't want a plastic $15 trash can sitting in the middle of all this beautiful luxury.

I have one for trash and one for recyclables. It's nice to have the trash bag storage slot in the back of the can, that houses a pack of bags. When you remove the trash bag, just reach in and slide another one in place. They are very sleek looking because you don't see the trash bag hanging around the edge. The foot pedal makes them hands free and I love that. The bags are very sturdy so there is no worries of them ripping when overloaded. There is also a tab in the package of bags that let's you know when you are running low. The lid closes slowly and quietly, so you don't have to worry about getting "struck" by a fast closing lid😂 For these reasons, I think they are a worthwhile investment.

EDITED: These are the versions I have, purchased from BB&B for 139.99 a few years ago. One has a coppery/brass finish, but I see that they now come in an array of pretty colors.

For me buying a stainless steel good quality one is what I want and have. Nothing is as gross as those cheap plastic ones that have to be replaced often because they don't clean up well and absorb odors through the garbage bag liners. I don't care about having a certain look and have an older functional mismatched kitchen. I have the one that has a piece in the lid that can compress the garbage thus holding more. Bags also don't slip down so no garbage to not get in bag. My 50 lb dog couldn't knock this over like she did with those plastic ones either. Someone mentioned dogs getting at chicken bones - well who just throws chicken bones or any food waste in the garbage without wrapping them securely so the dogs could not easily access or smell them. I always wrap bones and keep them in the refrigerator until gargbage day to be sure anyway. Well worth the money for a heavier more secure and convenient one. No one is being forced to buy a better expensive one so why all the rath over them being sold and bought by others who want one for various realistic reasons???!!!

ITA with others who have purchased the Simple Human trash can. The stainless steal is lovely and mine has the non finger print coating so it's always clean and sleek looking. And yes I like the fact that the cover closes slowly and quietly and opens easily with the foot pedal. It is an expensive trash can but I've had mine for quite awhile now and it's like brand new. After replacing the crappy plastic ones that hold bacteria you'll end up spending more than what you spent for the good one. I did get mine on Am*zon and with prime paid no shipping or tax!

Same thing people said to me for spending $14.00 on socks for an outside job on my feet all day. Seemed pretty clear to me.
