Your Oster mixer, meaning a stand mixer similar to a KitchenAide or is it just a hand mixer? I think the Vitamix is a great thing to have (own one myself), but it doesn't take the place of a stand mixer, IMO. The Vitamix can handle many chopping and blending type jobs, and it's great for making smoothies and frozen yogurt/ice cream, but you can't mix cake batter, cookie dough, bread dough, mashed potatoes, etc. with it.

I guess you need to figure out how much you will use it. They are very costly just to gather dust. I am still using my moms 33 year old one for smoothies everyday and to grind up whole grains into flour. I haven't made any soups with it or any ice cream so I can't help you there. I would LOVE new one but will wait until this one gives out.

It won't juice, either. That is the only disappointment I have with mine. It just turns everything to foam, not juice.

I know those who juice love it, but for me, the Vitamix is better than a juicer, because you get a liquid form of the entire fruit or vegetable--nothing left to toss and nothing to clean up. depglass, I haven't had that foam issue. In addition, I love it for soup and "ice cream" -- again, not an ice cream maker, but better because its so easy and I think the results are even better. I don't make doughs, so I can't speak to that, but otherwise it seems to do everything a mixer and blender and food processor can do.

If you are one the fence because of cost, go to the Vitamix website and look at a reconditioned variable speed version. I picked up one for $299 and it comes with a full 5 yr warranty. Love mine and can't tell it's not new!!

I was in the same position a few months ago and finally made the decision to buy it when it was a TSV and I must say that I'm so glad I did. Yes, they are expensive and therefore, an investment but the Vitamix is so worth it. I use mine almost every day and sometimes more than once a day. I guess it depends on what you'll be using it for. I'm so glad that I have one!

I guess I'd have to ask why would you not? You can try it out for 30 days and return it to QVC if you're not pleased. So no investment lost. It's made in the USA also, which gives it a leg up IMHO.

There's just the two of us most of the time, and we do use it for soups, smoothies, bread crumbs, nut butters, all sorts of things.

I feel it's been a very good investment in spite of the cost.

It arrived Thursday. I have already made smoothies, riced raw potatoes for soup, chopped onions, made frozen lemonade for hubby, etc. Loving it!
