Our son, a professional chef, gave us a Chefs Choice. DH sharpens all our knives with it (they are very sharp). I would recommend this sharpener for most knives( not ceramic , not Japanese style).

I use a Chef's Choice device, but it's really all about the knowledge and skill of the user. You can ruin a knife on the best sharpener if you don't really have the know-how.

Suggest regardless of what you buy, he read and then practice on lesser knives. You can pickup a handful of "practice knives" at a rummage, 2nd hand store.

Wusthof knives are expensive & very nice knives. I would NOT have someone who doesn't know anything about sharpening knives sharpen their own knives. They will only dull them. As others have mentioned practice with some of your more inexpensive knives. You can go to Youtube and learn the technique.

Best, take them to a professional knife sharpener. Often your butcher provides a service that does this.

I've had mine for 20+ years. They are wonderful knives.

P.S. Google is a great resource.

I'm not a "chef" but I cook 95% of my meals. I have very expensive knives as well as medium expense knives. Sharp knives are vital to my kitchen (my beloved maman taught me that). I use the Wolfgang Puck knife sharpener I bought on HSN. I love it.

Oh thank you so much everyone.I am now wondering if I should pay for them to be professionally sharpened as he has no experience. The knives are really expensive and he loves them so I would hate for them to get damaged.
