Grocery Home Delivery

Have any of you had to get food, long term, without going to a grocery store and shopping for it?

If you're lucky enough to have any grocery stores with a 'home delivery' service you'll know the entire grocery store is not available online, so for starters your choices are limited.

The price on each item you put in your cart is inflated over the in-store price. Some don't let you have the 'sale' prices you would've gotten in the store either.

Then there is the added service fee(s) and delivery fee, and the tip.

In the last year it's been a necessity for me, and I've ordered groceries through Aldi, Woodman's, and Meijer, and looked into a few more.

Personally, I hate this. I experience this as a big loss since I love the whole process of shopping for food.

Have you used this type of service?

What grocery stores, and what are your thoughts?

I have not used this. I am very picky about my fresh produce and I don't want anyone else to pick them out for me.

A few years back before I had surgery, I went to Omaha Steak and filled my freezer with individual sized items so that I would have enough protein to eat while I recuperated.

I have been using home delivery for groceries for several years now. I use FreshDirect and I am very happy with it. I used to use Peapod (Stop n Shop) and there were just awful. Always late, missing and destroyed items, etc. FreshDirect has been very good for our needs. They are a little more expensive but I consider it that I am paying for a premium service. My partner and I absolutely hate doing a big grocery trip so this has kept the peace between us. I occasionally go the local grocery store for something I forgot to order or something that FreshDirect doesn't carry. I enjoy the trip since it's only for a handful and no lugging of tons of stuff inside the house. FreshDirect has good sales every week too. And very high quality foods.

my daughter uses a home delivery service for groceries. she is a student.

she does have a few grocery stores near her apartment and she does use them, but the bulk of her groceries come via amazon prime.

she likes it and if there are any problems with the order they immediately give her a credit.

i dont use it myself because i enjoy going to my favorite grocery stores. it is almost a "quiet time" for me.

The only grocery delivery service I have used is non perishables from Amazon.

For one thing we live in the boonies and its not offered. I too am to picky to have anyone else pick out my meats and produce.

At least you had the delivery service available when you need it. Thats one way for you look at it. You do not have to depend on family, friends or neighbors which could get quite tedious.

@x Hedge - I'm not sure if this is an option for you, but my sister-in-law swears by the pickup service at Walmart. They always give her the best of the best produce, bakery items, and so forth because they want to get good ratings and return business, and if an item she wants is not in stock, she will either get an upgraded similar item or the option to not be charged. She also sometimes uses the delivery and/or pickup service available through Smith's (aka Kroger, Ralphs, King Sooper's, and other names in different parts of the country) and thinks they do a great job as well. I've never heard her mention that either of those stores charges more than the regular/sale prices, though delivery fees and such would apply. In fact, at Smith's, there are special coupons and offers that are only available when you select pickup or delivery.

Good luck with your shopping; I hope you can figure out a solution that works for you.

The grocery stores in my area offer home delivery & you can order everything online, get the same price, use coupons, make requests, ok substitutes, get special offers, etc....all of it is the same as using their pickup service or shopping in the store. Order online, it's delivered quickly & it's a great service.

@x Hedge While recovering from surgery I used Shop Rite's shop from home service. There is a fee for shopping the order and for delivery. There are NO differences in the in store vs shop from home prices. All in store deals and coupons are honored. They call after shopping the order to let me know if they have questions or to suggest an alternate or raincheck if an item is out of stock.

I was so happy with the service and quality of the items that I continue to shop this way.

I started ordering my groceries online with Peapod and Amazons Primenow several years ago. At the time, I was in severe pain almost 24/7. I had osteoarthritis in my left knee, spinal stenosis and muscle pain. Dragging myself around a grocery store was not possible. You are right, the entire store is not availabe online but for me, that was a very good thing. I was trying to eat healthy and that's was always hard for to do when I shopped in a big grocery store. All the prepared foods, the baker, the deli, the chips and snacks. The frozen food section! I shopped better and cheaper by shopping. I'd send hubby to pick specialty items that were not available online. Fast forward and I'm so much better physically. I had my knee replacement, my back pain has improved. I can walk just fine now but I still order groceries online and have them delivered because I like doing it that way. Pushing a cart up and down those aisles isn't something I like to do. Every two weeks, I have Peapod deliver and on Saturdays, I go to a small grocery store that has a lot specialty items and I pick up a few things. I avoid the danger areas like the bakery. It's funny because half the people in my condo complex shop with Peapod and Primenow. I see those trucks and the guys delivering building to building. Some people do like the grocery shopping experience so I can understand how you feel.

@Travone , yep. Me too.

My most recent delivery included a 3pak of zucchini.

From seeing the skins I knew they were overly ripe and the seeds would be too mature to eat.

Upon closer inspection I saw light fuzzy mold had started on the center one.

I would've passed on it in the store, but since zucchini was on my shopping list...my shopper brought it.

In another instance bananas were priced 19¢ each. I ordered 7 bananas.

My shopper brought me 7 hands of ripe bananas. The email follow up to get refunds can also be a headache.

I use home delivery every week at Fred Meyer and I am extremely happy with it. The shoppers do a great job picking produce for me. If they think I won't be happy with something, they text me and ask me how to proceed or if they can substitute something else. There is also a place on the app to put notes about how I like things - like, "please place my mushrooms in a paper bag."

Prices are exactly the same as they are in our local store except there are electronic coupons I can use, some of which are for online shoppers only. Using these coupons often recoups the cost of the $10 charge + tip. My choices are not limited and I can often find things online that I could never find by looking around for 30 minutes in the store.

Since I don't have a car, this is cheaper than paying a cab to and from. And I don't have to schlep all over the store, which I have always hated, with a bad knee. Personally, I love paying $60 a month for a professional shopper to bring my groceries to my door. I go personally about every three months to pick up a prescription - but it is sooo much easier to do it this way.

I know what you mean about eating healthier when ordering online. I think it helps me buy just exactly what I need and no impulse items. I went to a Super Stop n Shop recently to look for a specific thing my delivery didn't have and I was kind of astonished and horrified how the top of every single aisle was just junk food junk food junk food! Entenmann's cakes, Doritos, all manner of evil temptation. I thought, thank god I am not here all the time. It would wear me down. (Kind of like why I shop at Sephora online only. The devil gets me once I enter one of those stores!)

Here I shop directly from the ad that is in the newspaper(online) and I can assure you that we receive the same as the store prices. You might want to change stores.

Many people use this service here including lots of young people. They would not stay in business long if they were not honoring sale prices etc. I do realize that everything in the store is not listed. I do make a point of speaking with a manager or personal shopper for any items that I might want that are not listed.

This has been a great service to me and I gladly pay the fee for the shopper or for delivery. I do not particularly enjoy shopping for food except for my trips to the farmers market. I have RA and long trips to the store while possible usually result in several days of pain to recover. I will probably never go back to doing it all myself.

I have always done this. mostly all my life. Even though I am surrounded by big supermarkets,ect. and can generally walk to any store I choose.

Now I order from Amazon fresh and absolutely LOVE it!

I choose what day and time I want it delivered and it arrives on time. Packed well and even in freezer chests if perrishable.

I will NEVER go back to shopping for myself............lol Why should I ??????

My oldest daughter tried it for several months last Winter, as she is a single mom to a Pre-Teen boy, and she also works two jobs, so having the time to actually go grocery shopping and not have to zip thru the store was also an issue.

Anyway she hates to grocery shop, so she tried it, and while she said it was very convenient, she went back to going herself. She said you couldn't use coupons and sometimes you just want to see what it is the store.....

My husband loves to grocery shop, and while I don't mind it, I tend to go on days when it is not super busy, and I like a smaller Grocery store .I spend way too much in those super large stores....He and I go together, so its not so bad......We tend to go after church on Sundays.....

I use SHIPT and it was a life saver for me after major surgery! I order online and they put it on the kitchen table for me.

Now, I can go to the store, and I enjoy going occasionally to look over the new stuff they offer. I always pick up several items for myself.

I enjoy not having to shop for the items you buy each week, rebuy and use frequently. I often get fresh Deli foods and they always have some good sales items. The produce is well chosen.

You can add a "special request" item to any order, any time. You are not limited to ordering from the SHIPT database.

I hate food shoping.

25 yrs ago I found a company that does your grocery shopping & delivers your groceries right to your home. They will unpack & store your food away for you if you want.

Outside the price of your groceries, all you pay is $1 delivery charge. The delivery charge is FREE on Fridays. Tipping the driver is optional. Guess which day I have my groceries delivered?

The groceries comes from the local supermarket. The meats are from an old fashion (back in da day) family owned BUTCHER SHOP!!!!

Once a year a food catalog is mailed to your home.

You order by phone NOT online.

Pay in CASH, CHECKS, MONEY ORDERS, CC & FOOD STAMPS

MANUFACTURER & STORE COUPONS ARE ACCEPTED

This company serves 3 counties. When I discovered this company I've been ever since!

I’ve used Instacart without any problems. For $99 a year can get unlimited free delivery.

In addition to their pick-up service, which I've used for a couple of years, Wal-mart now has home delivery. You can order anything in the store at the normal price. Produce is picked from the back room, if they substitute, you get a bigger, better item at the price you would have paid. No tipping. I've been very happy with the pick up service.
