I use mine for food left on plates and cooking pans. I don't put peelings down it or large amounts of food at one time. I use hot water in case some of the food has some grease/oil in it.

Egg shells are the worst thing to put down one. A Roto/Rooter guy told me this. We have rentals and tell the tenants not to do this. We once had a woman put a whole bouquet down hers. Needless to say, that was a service call.

If you have one, what do you put down it?

I grew up in NYC where garbage disposals are unknown. Had one in our house in Nevada. Never used it. Never got a clear answer as to what could or couldn't be disposed of. Do not have one now and certainly don't miss it.

@kaydee50. Never heard of them in my area of NJ either. Had one for awhile where I live now but got rid of it.

Practically nothing goes down mine, that wouldn't go down a regular drain. Oh, sometimes I'll toss lemons in to freshen it. For the most part, plates and pans are wiped off or licked by the dog.

No grease. Of course trace amounts get through, but I prevent what I can. I use cold water, and let it run for 15-20 seconds after it's chopped up what went in and been turned off.

I learned the hard way years ago to never put egg shells and potato peelings into the garbage disposal! I put few items in mine.....leftover soft/wet cat food in their dishes, small amounts of leftover food like scrambled eggs, jello, gravy, etc. I wouldn't be without the disposal, but for me it's more for little scraps of soft food when I'm rinsing a dish or pan.

I don't put anything down the disposal because I don't want to deal with jams. I have a strainer in the sink to catch anything from the dishwater.

I scrape all food bits into the garbage can, not the disposal. I personally don’t feel comfortable having ground up food sitting within the disposal unit or my kitchen pipes. I mean, wouldn’t that be where any smell would come from? Also, I was told to flush with straight hot water if it’s being used.

Everything but the cat and the cat knows to be careful. We put lots of eggshells down ours and have never had an issue.

If I string celery, I'll put the strings in the trash can. But honestly, other stuff onions, peels, etc. etc. down it goes.

We buy the best one we can fit in and let 'er rip. Maybe we've been lucky. We've had one since 1977. Water is whatever temp is coming out of the faucet.

Eggs, lemons, meat, potatoes (no peels) liquids, onions, pretty much anything, I’ve had one for decades and never had a problem.

It's a garbage disposal. Why wouldn't you put kitchen garbage down it? The only thing I do not put down it are the celery strings and bones of any kind.

Although my MIL swore chicken bones kept her garbage disposal blades sharp!!

Mostly everything except large bones and anything that's greasy. Doesn't like onion skins too much, but I mix them with something else.

Since we push ours to the max, we always keep a new one on hand in case it stops working. We keep the trash cans in the garage that will attract zillions of flies, so we keep food waste to a minimum.

I grew up with a garbage disposal so I would have a hard time living without one. My daughter doesn't have one and it turns my stomach emptying the stuff that accumulates in the drain stopper. I put just about everything in ours so our garbage can doesn't smell. My parents even put steak bones in theirs but that's one thing I don't do. We've lived in this house for 38 years and I'm only on my 3rd one. I love having one.

I put most everything down mine too. I replaced my old disposal a couple years ago and the instructions say I can even put small bones down it. I think the newer disposals are more powerful than the disposals of years ago. My instructions also say to use cold water when running the disposal so that’s what I use.

Disposals are fabulous! I put eggshell down mine, I don’t think they are bad.

The bad list that I never put down the disposal is anything fibrous, like celery or any grease, or anything so hard it won’t grind up. Be careful small metal items don’t fall in like silverware!

I don't use mine as much as I did years ago. We are supposed to "compost/recycle" this stuff and have a special garbage can for it. I do put some items I scrape off my plate (just me so it isn't much) and sometimes a few peels from carrots or small piece of fruit. I would never put artichokes or asparagus in the garbage disposal. Egg shells, coffee grounds, bones, etc. go in our special garbage bin for that type of stuff. I do try to use my disposal some otherwise I think the rubber drain hoses eventually crack and you have water leaks.

Also, I run a cut in half lemon (sometimes add ice cubes) down mine to take away odor and freshen it.

We have a yard waste container supplied to us and we are supposed to put the normal things that you would put in a garbage disposal in them. The county makes compost with it. The only things I put in the garbage disposal is liquid-like things I am getting rid of (like soup, etc). I do turn it on for a minute whenever I start the dishwasher and occasionally put 1/2 lemon down it. I always use cold water.

pretty much everything......including egg shells, potato peels, lemons, scraps of food, pieces of fat, peels from vegetables, coffee grounds......have never had any issues and we do have a septic system.
