I went to make a tuna salad sandwich and found that my toaster died ovenight. I used it yesterday when I first made the tuna salad and everything was fine with it.

It's a four slice Proctor-Silex and it has been a real workhorse. I don't remember exactly how old it is, but it was a gift from my sister who died twenty years ago. So it's probably around 23 years old.

And always take your toaster to the kichen basket and turn your toaster over and shake the toaster so as to dislodge the crumbs that could be left in the toaster. This really saves the life of the toaster.

Just might have been a big chunk of bread broke off. I always unplug mine after I use it. And keep it unplugged when not usung it. I also push the lever down once without the bread in , and then when it pops up place my bread in that way it gets done quicker because I've pre heated the toaster. But don't ever buy those toaster bags , they killed my toaster. They are used to make grilled cheese sandwiches in the toaster. They worked I bought them from the Q years ago. Now I saw them in the grocery store . In my opinion they are bad news for your toaster.

Not only turn it over to get crumbs out but I've never had a toaster that didn't have little pull out drawers down at the bottom in the back to unload accumulated crumbs.

if you have a air fryer they are great to make toast and any bread or anything thick that dosnt fit in a toaster but if you dont have a toaster than good luck getting it to work or to buy a new toaster.

@ Dear Prudence

I am also super concerned about all my heated appliances.
It bears mentioning that I saw on news recently that Toaster Strudels have been known to start fires in toasters. One woman had her curtains catch on fire. She and husband got to safety but lesson to be learned.

Indeed you reminded me that my toaster before this one did have the hinged plate. The little drawers that pull completely free of the toaster are so much easier to turn upside down and clean off that coating of weeny little crumbs that stick. That plate would dangle and be clumsy to wipe clean.

When replacing a toaster, I suggest not going cheap. I don't trust cheap. I've had a Breville, the long two slot model with the lift and look, frozen, bagel, options that has worked perfectly for at least 8 years, maybe 10. It can handle thick slices, long artisan bread slices, 4 normal bread or burger bun slices. It has the pull out tray.

This also happened to me a couple of years ago. I was making coffee in my electric percolator and it never perked. Then I put 2 pieces of bread in the toaster - and nothing!!!! I pressed the reset button on the wall and it worked. Another time this happened and I was told to press the button in the fuse box for a few seconds - then turn it on. My toaster was OLD - so I tossed it out and bought a brick red/silver, retro look, Kitchen Aid wide slot toaster. At the side/bottom of the toaster, u press it and a small tray comes out - which u empty. Once in a while, I turn it upside down over my sink. It doesn't toast evenly --- but it's fine for me. It matches my KA whistling tea kettle.
