Filter Pitcher VS Faucet Filter

Which is better? I have had a filter pitcher and it developed mold, possibly because it was not kept in the fridge!??

So I have been trying to decide on trying a pitcher again or a filter on the faucet?

Can you all advise?!

@FlowerBear Yes, the mold would come from that. You have to keep the filtration pitcher in the refrigerator. I've had and used my PUR pitcher for years without any problems.

I also had the same brand for the kitchen faucet for yearsbut haven't used it since I moved to my current apartment--kitchen sink set up is fancier/more up to date and I don't want to chance doing anything to disturb it.

I didnt even know you should keep the pitcher in the fridge. Silly me lol. I tried the PUR too and when it got the mold I was afraid to use it again.

I have moved to a new place too which is more up to date! So happy and happy for you

@FlowerBear : I didn’t know that should be kept in refrigerator. My looked bad yesterday and will put it in the dishwasher. I kept mine on the counter because I have trouble lifting it. We have low water pressure in our area and afraid to attach anything to the faucet. Southern Bee

I've always used a brita. I love it. I have filtered water on the door of my fridge too that has the same charcoal filtration as pur. We have town water and I can smell chlorine from the sink but it's fine once it's filtered. I usually keep it in the fridge but have left it out on occasion, never knew you had to keep it in the frige. What I don't like about the pitcher is its not dishwasher safe. Wonder if the Pur is?

I'd think if you cleaned it out really well it would be fine and just leave it in the fridge and change it - I don't like the look of the faucet filter so I use the pitcher.

that happened to my Brita too, just cleaned it out, new filter etc.

I keep in the fridge once its' gets hot.

I was afraid to use it due to my mold allergies. Dont have a dishwasher, and that might have cleaned it better!

@Jtdmum : I have the zero water pitcher and since in has mold will put it in the dishwasher and if it messes it up will purchase a new one. We have filter water on the fridge but use the other for coffee pot and DH bipap machine. Southern Bee

I've had a brita for many years, never had any mold. It's kept in the fridge always. I hand wash and use vinegar. I change the filter regularlly.

I noticed a bit of green on it, which I attributed to the pitcher being on the counter in the summer with lots of light, it is not unusual for this to happen to britas

washed with lots of hot water and soap and now I just keep in fridge once the warm weather gets here.

Keep it in the fridge. I clean it and many things that are kitchen related with baking soda. It does a light scrubbing, once in a while, on brita, coffee pot and cups and glasses that I use for tea.

I have a faucet filter and love it. The only drawback is that the replacement filters are not cheap and I replace mine every 6 months. I got a new refrigerator about a year ago and it has a water/ice dispenser thru-the- door and it also has a filter that needs replacing every 6 months.

I've used a Briita Pitcher for years, but I've always kept it in the refrigerator. Had a Pur on my faucet for a bit, but it always seemed to get in the way. I'll stick with my Brita pitcher.

I don't want to invest in a whole house water filter. Not in this house.

I have a zero water pitcher, no trouble with mold but I don't like taking everything out of my water. We should be ingesting naturally occurring minerals.. My municipal water is horrendous, which is such a shame, we are blessed here in central Alabama with some wonderful water.

We use a reverse osmosis system. It's under the sink in the cabinet. There is a spigot on the sink.

I have the Brita pitcher that I keep on my kitchen counter (not in the refrigerator). After I use the ,pitcher of water - used to make my daily coffee, it gets a little moldy. I wash out the pitcher with a little dish-soap - and with a wet cotton swab I run it around the ridge area inside the pitcher (near the bottom) - and there are several areas inside the plastic holder that contains the filter that I swab. Areas that have ridges - and the openings at the bottom of each filter - and those 4 circles - all hold mold.

It's because it all sits in water --- u need to wash it out before putting in fresh water.

For me, neither. I have a countertop water distiller. The water is clean and delicious. I’ve been drinking distilled water for more than 20 years and I think it’s healthier than any bottled water. I bought it from waterwise.com, and they’re having a sale! I think you owe it to yourself to check out distilled water.

@Nightowlz, I didn't know they made reverse osmosis for under the sink. Where do you get it? I have an instant hot water heater under the sink and don't know that I would want to give that up for the RO though. Otherwise I would need another hole in the sink. The water heater uses the hole that was supposed to be for a soap dispenser. I can't use anything that screws onto the sink spout because due to the design there is nothing to screw onto.

Really, I'd rather have a whole house system because I would love to remove the hard water and chlorine from my shower water.

I keep my zero water on the counter since I just don't have room for it in the fridge. So far I have not had a mold problem. I don't use it for drinking water for me, but for the kitty fountain so I don't get that nasty hard water buildup that you can't get off.

However, you have to remember that once you have removed everything from the water, there's nothing to fight the growth of bacteria. So, keeping it in the fridge may slow down that process, but if bacteria can grow in the fridge, it can also grow in your pitcher in the fridge.
