Why does this stink?

DH does our grocery shopping. This morning he was taking ground beef out of the container from the store and repackaging it for the freezer. I was in the kitchen at the same time and smelled something quite stinky. I had no idea what it was, so I sniffed the store package that still had some meat in it. It was the meat that smelled rotten! After it was out of the package for several seconds it no longer smelled. The package had the date 3/19/19. I said it should be returned to the store. But DH thinks it's ok. I've had food poisoning and do not want to experience that again.

Does anyone know if there's a problem or why this beef smelled in the package?

I don't know but I'm with you if smells funny I would not eat it since I have also had food poisoning. No fun. I was a teenager & thought I was dying.

You may want to go to the FDA.org website, I did read about a large ground beef recall this past week,, but don't remember the brands or dates involved.

But I have always lived by 'when in doubt, throw it out', after battling food poisoning.

There have been too many recalls on ground beef and if it smells I would not take a chance on getting sick after eating that meat...frozen or not!

@Nataliesgramma - Actually, they're prohibited from doing that by law, but some stores and producers infuse carbon dioxide during the packaging process to help the meat retain its red color. (So as you might guess, the redness of packaged meat is not necessarily an indicator of its freshness—go by the label date when purchasing. Even if the meat is slightly brown, all that means is that it likely has had an extra day on the shelf that allowed it to take in a bit more oxygen; if the date is still good, the meat is still good.)

@this is my nic - If the meat no longer smells and has a normal texture (i.e., it is not slimy or tacky), there's a chance you just had a weird odor interaction due to the packaging. I've experienced that sensation before. But if the meat does still smell, I agree with the others here: TOSS IT.

@this is my nic , freeze it and return it. Hopefully you have pkg. if not, Imwould return it anyway. The store should know you had an issue with it. Bring your receipt and they will refund. LM

No I wouldn't eat it either--prob the juices from the meat are what were smelly but why risk it.

Sometimes its hard to trust stores. They use ways to make meat look fresher than it is. One time, I was at a store looking at fish, and it all smelled of ammonia. I didn't buy any. How could they even think to sell that.

All I know is that if it smelled funny, I wouldn't eat it. I assume 3/19 was the "sell by" date. It's 3/17 so you are awfully close and we know stores have nasty habit of playing fast and loose with meats and "sell by dates".

Return that packaged ground beef to the market. There should be no questions asked.

I only eat grass fed, hormone free beef.

Same for any meat or poultry. Only organic, and hormone free. Turkey, chicken , pork, lamb. I grind them myself.

Seafood only if wild caught. Never from Asia.

You only have one body. Why take a chance and risk eating bad or inferior quality food?

A butcher once told me that the meat that is in that heavy cryovac package (like ribs and such) may smell off for a few minutes when you open it, but that will go away quickly because it is the smell of gases in the packaging process.

I only eat ground beef that is ground locally in a market or butcher shop, or that we grind from roasts and steaks in the kitchen aid grinder, the food processor (for a quick small batch). It tastes just as good as the best cuts of beef--and it should!

I would worry about that stuff ground in those huge plants.

Men sense of smell sometimes is way off. My husband would sometimes get his food brought to him in the restaurant and tell me it smelled fine when it was horrible. Now after all these years If I tell him that he will send it back. I think he got sick and didn't tell me way back then.But If you think it's not right take it bcak to the store don't chance sicken youselfs.That just smart.
