What's the deal with Lock & Lock?

I'm so not impressed with this brand.

They aren't supposed to stain. Mine have stained.

They're supposed to be microwave safe. I've had one melt.

Lock & Lock is a bunch of hype. I won't be buying any more.

I've had a lot of L & L for many years and love it.

Mine has never stained or melted in the microwave. Probably because I've never used in the microwave.

I cook/warm foods in glass only that's microwave safe.

In my opinion, the quality has really tanked, especially with the new colors. I have had many tabs break off. They look flimsy right out of the box.

I wasn't putting my new lock & lock in the microwave, but they are all pitted inside. Disappointed. I am slowly moving back to glassware.

Some of mine have stained when I microwave something with a tomato-based sauce or broth, but I don’t really care about that. I’ve never had one melt in the microwave, though. I’d contact customer service about the items that melted.

I love mine! I have stored chili and spaghetti sauce in mine and not had any staining. Once the container is empty I wash it right away. I do not put them in the dishwasher or the microwave. I have had mine probably ten years and the only problem I had was with the rubber gasket on one of the lids and L&L sent me a new lid. Sorry to hear you have had issues.

If I'm going to put a tomato based product in my L&L, I first spray with vegetable oil. Seems to curtail any possible staining. I've never had a L&L container melt in the microwave. I have lots of L&L and it's a product line that has served me well. Haven't had to buy any recently, so maybe the quality has changed.

@beetle812 I love L&L and the only issues I have had was the last set I bought . I opened one plastic sack and a tab fell out from a small container. I called cs and they immediately sent a replacement. If I were you I would call cs . Have your info ready . If you still have the numbers on the bottom of container it would be handy.

How long did you have the peice in the microwave ? I believe most of the plastic containers are considered for storage and reheating only. 2-3 minutes? For cooking their glass and ones of another material (sp?) should be used .

I wouldn't use any other product for storage and freezing as they have NEVER leaked in my experience. I have never found another product that lives up to that. I appreciate how IMO food lasts for freshness longer .

Lock & Lock's quality has gone way down hill. They aren't what they used to be. Tabs breaking, staining, haven't had one melt in the microwave. But when L & L touts microwave safe, they should be. I have been replacing what Lock & Locks I still have with Rubbermaid Brilliance containers. Much better quality, made in the USA and no tabs.

I've never had one melt on me. I have had them discolor with tomato based food. The staining doesn't bother me but hasn't happened too much.

Over time the bowls have shown wear from use but that is expected from a plastic bowl.

The instructions with it say very clearly that tomato-based or other acidic foods will stain it. I think that's true of any plastic. I know it was true years and years ago with Tupperware which was the vaunted plastic of my early days. I've always saved throwaway containers for those foods - cottage cheese containers and plastic ice cream tubs for the most part. Stains don't matter for recycling.

I think given its price, the LnL is okay but not as good as pieces that cost me much more.

My old L&L, ten years old and older, is like brand new.

A lot of my newer L&L is worse for wear. I have tabs breaking off, lids that will longer fit right and seals that have stretched and will not stay in.

i agree that the quality has gone down. The colored lids are the worse.

I've had staining, but no tab issues. Newer versions are not the quality of the older version. My old ones are thicker and easy to open. I have a new set that it is a challenge to open. Should have Sent it back.

I've used L&L containers for the past 10 or so years. I discarded all of my old containers and solely use L&L's. I love them. I've never had one break, melt, discolor, nothing! I always shake my head when I hear others woes with L&L containers. I just don't get it.

Thanks for the replies.

I've always put plastic containers in the microwave for reheating.

We have some really old plastic containers that have never melted but I was afraid they had BPA so, I got some Lock & Lock containers.

I mainly wanted them for my husband to reheat his lunch at work. We're only using them in the microwave for a few minutes.

And QVC/Lock & Lock rep does say they're microwave safe and they don't stain.

The only thing that makes them better than my ancient cheap plastic containers is the silicone seal and BPA free.

I'm trying out freezing some soup in a Lock & :Lock right now. We'll see how that goes.

Maybe I do need to find glass containers for my husband's lunch.

Hello @beetle812 I have discovered that if you store foods that are tomato based or something with yellow dye then the bowls will stain...you should try the tritan line they truly don't stain.

I have melted a lock & lock before LOL...for some reason my moms microwave cooks at a much higher and faster rate than my old JCPenny one.

Overall, lock & lock is a great line you just have to know what to store and what not to store in them..also you can take a look at their "use and care" instructions on the site: http://www.locknlock.com/eng/locknlock/Warranty and it will help with any future mishaps.

i haven't used them in the microwave. why i don't know, other then before lock n lock i used glass dishes to warm something up in the microwave.

for as long as i can remember, the claim was that they did not stain. i just did not believe that, so i never put anything in them that i thought would stain, like pasta sauce.

there is a new tritan line that is not suppose to stain. you didn't say which line you are using.

sadly, i think the quality of lock n lock has changed. i have read so many reviews that said either they received them with broken tabs or some tabs broke off within the first month of use. i don't know what is going on, but it is not a good look, if you know what i mean.

I've found that the last few years, I have to really pay attention to what sets I buy. Some are much better made than others, and when they have a TSV, it is very often a thinner plastic, cheaper locking tabs and not good quality.

My really old ones never leaked, but most of the newer ones do, especially the bowls.

I find value in the ones I have and I'm careful about what I buy now. They do stain with tomato products in them, but I never have used them in the microwave (except the glass ones), but I"m sure the would warp if overheated.

Lock and Lock has great glass containers just right for lunches. They have vented tops for use in the microwave. There are a couple of sets online now, but the ones I got are out of stock right now, set of four square. I bought three sets and make lunches ahead for him, and put them in the freezer. I love those so much!

@beetle812 I have never had Lock & Lock stain. I store and heat with them. I store things like chili and Indian foods with tumeric. Never a stain. I have had little white flecks from heating in the microwave, and one or two tabs break off. I wonder what you are storing that is staining.
