Like last night...I made French toast for the grandchildren (ages 2, 4 & 6). They love my French toast! 2 eggs, heavy cream, cinnamon, then pats of butter & syrup. The 2 older children always eat 2 slices, the little girl eats one whole slice.

Sure enough, the older girl ate her 2 slices, but the boy only wanted 1. (That was most unusual!) The little girl was eating, but not enthusiastically.

Enough batter was left for DH (2 slices) and one last one for me.

When I tasted mine I couldn't believe that instead of sprinkling in the cinnamon, I had inadvertenly reached for the cayenne pepper!

DH ate his, but he detected something amiss! Not that it was the most awful, but I did end up giving him most of mine, and then he also finished the little girl's!

I should have worn my glasses!

Please share your cooking errors! (So I don't feel so bad!)

I made a pumpkin roll for thanksgiving, I noticed that when I poured it on the counter cookie sheet, it looked a little off but didn’t think no more about it. Got it out of the oven, thinking there’s something different about the color. Then I realized that I hadn’t even put any pumpkin in it. Needless to say- i hard to start over.

OMG lol. I have of fear of reaching for chili powder instead of cinnamon.

I've been making the same chili recipe for over 40 years. Once I thought it was a little bland - not spicy at all. I had forgotten to put any spices in.

Another time I made pickled eggs (which I make twice a year) - I was at work and hubby decided to have one. I had forgotten to shell the eggs.

A couple of Christmas's ago I decided to make a sweet potato casserole with the mini marshmallows on top. Popped it into the oven no worries until I turned around and the entire top was on fire (I had a Breville oven so it looked like that Yule Log that TV stations have on around the holidays). I quickly unplugged the oven and the flames went out (and the casserole was actually a bit salvagable) but that vision will never leave my memory. It looked so festive . . . sigh.

Thanks for starting this thread @Harpa, I think it will be good for more than a few laughs . . .

There have been a few, but this is the worst. When we were first married, we were as poor as church mice, so my Dad would give us some food from a friend who was a Dietz & Watson distributor. For our first Easter, he got us what I thought was a raw 10 pound beef roast. It was so big that I invited my in-laws, as well as my husband’s Aunt and Uncle with their 4 kids. The 2 ladies couldn’t make it, but everyone else came. When we sat down to dinner, everything was delicious except for the roast beef. It was so salty we could barely eat it! It turned out that it was already cooked (very rare roast beef) and by re-roasting it, the salt had concentrated even more. Uncle Pat’s mother must have taught him to be sure to compliment his hostess for dinner because his parting remark was that the vegetables were delicious. He was so sweet!

My perspective might be a little different regarding "disasters". I tend to think of them as trial and error, and yes... there have been many errors.

I can't recall any that happened when I had guests, but my kids would sometimes say, "It's good Mom, but don't make it again". 🤣

I do cringe when I think back on some of the dinners I served my mom and dad and my in-laws when I was a newbie in the kitchen. I can imagine the conversations they had in the car going home.

I just thought of something, though it can hardly be called "cooking". I decided to serve Kool-Aid at my son's 2nd birthday party. Please don't judge me... I was otherwise a good and caring mom, lol. Anyway, I was surprised that all the older kids hated it and drank water instead. When DH tried it he asked how much sugar I had added. Sugar? I was supposed to add sugar?

I had a doozie. Couple of years ago I was canning tomatoes. I put 6 quarts of tomatoes in the canner on top of the stove to boil. Then I went downstairs and turned on my computer to study for a test. I got so involved in studying that I completely forgot about the tomatoes.

I heard a loud noise and thought What was that? I went running up the stairs and got to the edge of the kitchen when it exploded again. The pot boiled out all the water. So I was cleaning the kitchen until 4 am. Tomatoes and broken glass were all over the cabinets, walls, ceiling, floor, light fixture, behind the appliances. I took down the vent over the stove and threw it in the garbage. Looked like a massacre happened in my kitchen.

I haven't canned in my kitchen since. Now I put the canner on a table out my back door and run an extension cord to a portable burner.

@Scooby Doo wrote:

@Scooby Doo

Ouch, that was nasty. Have not done it with glass jar canning but have boiling eggs, ran out of water and they started to explode......messy and lots of work cleaning the pan!
