I have a Cuisinart Griddler.......never really used it much until I purchased the waffle plates.............makes great waffles. Normally I make open faced cheese or cheese/ham sandwiches in my toaster oven as the griddler doesn't sit on the countertop.

I also have the cuisinart griddler which I use for paninis as well as it's other uses. I wouldn't buy a panini press just for that purpose - the unit would have to be more versatile. But I do make paninis about once per month.

I bought one about 5 years ago....and used it a couple of times at most. I finally "gifted" it to Goodwill practically brand new. I don't have the cabinet space for many small appliances, and I don't like them sitting on my counters. This is just my opinion, but unless your friend has mentioned that she/he really wants one, I'd pass on it as a gift.
