The Pioneer Woman--She buys ground beef?

I was watching the Pioneer Woman this morning and she was at the grocery store buying ground beef while her husband and kids were out working cattle!

Really? Excuse me but why won't you eat your own beef? Silliest thing I have seen on tv in a very long time! LOL!!!!

Thank goodness. I clicked on this for sure it would be bashing the PW for buying & eating beef. Let the vegan ire begin. (sigh)

@Sooner. She's been doing that for years, or at least showing it on tv. They ship their cattle out to the slaughterhouse. I guess they would have to go to wherever it is or have some sent to them. Who knows what they do.

She might just want to seem more relatable to the common cook.

They sell beef to companies who buy and process cattle, but if you want to eat one you take it to the slaughterhouse and they process it, make it however you want it cut, freeze it in packages to your specifications and you (or someone who works for you in their case) goes and gets the frozen packages.

It is wonderful because you can specify what you get, how many roasts, how big, size and kind of steaks, what goes into the ground beef and the fat content, etc. You get exactly what you want and you know what went into the animal.

I can't imagine buying anything from the store when you control the product yourself.

The answer is simple - they don't slaughter their cattle themselves. I know several cattle farms arond where I am and none slaughter their own. and do buy beef from stores. Most are too busy caring for the cattle to take time out to butcher a few themselves. It's not like Bonanza where they take from their herds and butcher it for their supper.

I'm guessing you're referring to all the fat. Few times I watched I noticed she uses a lot of butter in her cooking.

A lot of times depending on market price you can actually buy beef cheaper than you can pay to have it processed and packaged off your own ranch. If you are set up to do it yourself that makes a difference also. Most Ranchers don't have that set up though. Just speaking from a growing up on a cattle ranch perspective.

You don't butcher it yourself. I have never head of anyone doing that. There are places that do it for you, pack it up, etc. No. Never knew of anyone doing it themselves.

@Kitlynn It isn't about cheaper, it's about better. That stuff in the store never compares to what you can raise yourself. And if it does, it costs a zillion dollars and you have to get it from a specialty butcher shop usually.

And butchering beef isn't a do-it-yourself deal.

Plenty of milk and beef cattle up here.

You truck beef cattle out to the slaughter house or sell smaller lots at the local auction. Some local butchers here but they may only process deer or a cow. Some won't take pigs or birds like turkey, geese or ducks. Each is processed differently.

That said I don't know anyone who buys meat at the grocer when they own beef cattle.

@Sooner. Yes, even though I am from NJ, I know how it works. We can do this in the Northeast believe it or not.

They show them on the show weighing the cattle and loading them up. As I said, she plays the lil ole ranch housewife for her fans who probably are not half as wealthy as she is and buy their beef in the grocery store.

@KKJ, JMO, it's not just the fat, to me she just keeps throwing in ingredients that have no business in the recipe. But like I said it's just my opinion.

I stopped watching her show as soon as I realized what a phony she is. All those recipes are not her original ideas. What she calls breakfast potatoes are really Potatoes O'Brian which have been around for 100 yrs. and originated in a restaurant in NYC. Her lemon bars can be bought in the cake mix section of any grocery store in the free world. Her "beef drip" sandwiches is an old crockpot recipe. My mother was making "spread cookies" when I was a little girl....I am now 68.

When we had our cattle ranch we slaughtered, hung, and processed our own beef. We had a commercial grade walk-in cooler where we hung them to age. Along with professional meat saws, etc.

It was for our own personal use; we were not licensed to sell to the public.
