On my former glass top stove I was able to use my cast iron pans with no additional cleaning or problems. Recently I purchased a new Samsung glass top range, and instructions say cast iron can damage the elements. I'm also finding, although this top is shiny, gorgeous...it marks up from every little thing. Just boiling water, no spills or splashes and I have deep clean it. A simple wipe down doesn't remove any smudges or marks. I also have clean and polish. I'm so disappointed with that. Now, I'm always cooking, and love it, but I miss using my cast iron grill pan, and frying pan for those special foods. I googled everything...some sites say it's ok but dont drag the pan. Others say, they get too hot and can damage the heating elements. Like I said, my old range never had a problem...but this new one?? Am I in for worse cleaning too?? What would you do?

If it were me I would contact Sumsung's customer service directly and follow their advise. Did you get an instruction book with your new stove? The info should be in there.

One day I was simmering something in my cast iron dutch oven and all of a sudden there was a huge noise and the glass on the stove top cracked - shards of glass were all over the kitchen. When we called for it to be repaired the man told us that you can't use cast iron on glass top stoves because all that is under them to keep them elevated off the hot element are dollups of silicone and if you put a heavy weight on the glass top it compresses that silicone and the element touches the glass. The glass isn't made to tolerate that over a longer period of time and it will split. It was too expensive to get it fixed and we bought a new stove, and took all our cast iron to camp.

Thanks so much for posting, I was just looking at cast iron pans and I do have a glass top stove. That would of been expensive if I followed through on that thought.

So thank you again for posting!

Thanks everyone...looks like I'll skip using cast iron.
One thing for sure, they splatter like crazy...so since my new stove is hyper sensitive and likes to leave marks and spots and smudges...I think I can live without the BIG clean up. Oh, its trimmed with stainless steel...another joy to keep clean.
Thank you all for the quality info!!

We have Lodge cast iron. We use it regularly on our glass-top stove. We're very careful how we place the pans. We don't drag them across the top. Rather, we lift them, move them and gently place they down.

Works for us.
