For those cooks who use canned frosting, I'm sure this must be a good tip for y'all. These tips come in handy for us all, don't they? I've gotten a whole lot of good ones that work well for me through the years posting here.

I don't use canned frosting because to me, it has a funny taste.

Just put it in a bowl and with your electric hand mixer whip it up. I tried it and it worked, cheaper than buying another can of frosting. Next time I'll use my stand KA Mixer, instead of having to hold a hand mixer.

Thanks for the tip. I know when I made a German Chocolate cake there was not enough icing in the can. Used to be too much for a cake & now there's not enough.

If you are getting the mixer out, use 1 and 1/2 sticks of softened butter, one box or bag and a half (or as much as needed--depends on some variable factors) of powdered sugar, a pinch of salt and flavoring (vanilla, almond, etc.) and cocoa if you want chocolate and you have home made icing. Either way you have to clean the beaters!

PLEASE do not eat that stuff, they haven't taken out the saturated fat out of those cans.

Most of it is just a can of Crisco with sugared flavoring, frosting is so easy to make and you can control what goes in it.

You have a KA, whip the butter, add powdered sugar and warm milk and you'll have a fantastic frosting.

I agree - a good buttercream frosting is so fast and easy to make, and it tastes infinitely better than the canned junk! You can also make any flavor you like.

I usually use 1 stick of unsalted butter, 1 8 oz. brick of cream cheese (low fat is OK), 3-4 cups of confectioners' sugar, and flavoring; sometimes I find I'll need to add a little bit of heavy cream (or milk, if I don't have cream on hand). One thing I do find handy is those Duncan Hines frosting flavoring packets; I buy the more unusual flavors and just add them to my own frosting.

Yes, we all know that canned frosting is poison! Yes, I admit-I have used it in a pinch. Yes, I know how to make real frosting, (as if it's really that much 'healthier'). Thanks for the tip.

They just eat the frosting out of the can with a spoon. The same is true for the premade chocolate chip cookie dough. I know a few people who buy it and never bake cookies, but eat it raw. A lot of people have guilty pleasures that they like to indulge.

Personally I find most of the canned frostings to be okay and very convenient. Are they the best frosting in the world? No. But they're okay. If you're not eating a whole cake in one sitting or quickly, the canned frostings tend to hold up better long-term than many of the homemade frostings. For me, it takes about a week to finish off a cake. Canned frostings are generally every bit as good after a week as they were on day one. Homemade frostings tend to start having issues long before the week is up.

I don't think it will work with German Chocolate Frosting, because of the nuts and coconut. I used a can of cream cheese frosting. Hubby had wanted chocolate frosting and the store only had cream cheese or vanilla. I told him to get the cream cheese and I added some cocoa to it. It was yummy.

I'm absolutely okay with canned frosting - it's quick and easy and sometimes you need that. But if you're getting the mixer out and putting the effort in, why not put it into buttercream instead of the canned frosting? That just defeats the "quick & easy" purpose of canned frosting. I don't get it.

I had a think about it. I worked out why I hate Cool Whip but not canned frosting.

Cool Whip is often used as an ingredient, mixed in, so you can't opt out.

Canned Frosting is just put on something, so if you don't like it, you can scrape it off but still eat the cupcake.

Another trick is to put it in the microwave for a few seconds until it's somewhat pourable. This works well if you are making sheet cakes. The icing fills out the pan nice and evenly and cools nicely.
