Kitchenaid mixer - Spiral vs "J" shaped dough hook

I would go for a mixer model that uses a spiral dough hook. It kneads much better and with less strain and motor heating on the mixer than the "J" shaped dough hook.

.
The spiral dough hook presses the dough into the bottom of the bowl and kneads back and forth through it.
.
The "J" hook beats the dough against the side of the bowl and the dough climbs up the hook.
.
These YouTube videos show how each dough hook handles the dough during kneading.
.
.
Kitchenaid with Spiral Dough Hook
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSi2F4KUVF8
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-oDTmgKF80
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdpvpxnIuEs
.
.
Kitchenaid with "J" Dough Hook
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9AZmJ0y1s4
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRPDXe02G9w
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9ngieRWWFs
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEA4Pq0B5Pg
.
.
I have a Kitchenaid 5-qt bowl lifter model that came with a "J" hook and I found a KA Spiral hook that fits it. The spiral hook seems to develop the dough faster and with less heating of the dough than the "J" dough hook.

The glass bowl is heavy even in the 5 qt. It is beautiful but I don't like it for every day use however, I think the weight is a problem and I worry about chipping it when it gets banged around--and they do when you are getting cookie dough out in scoops and pouring things out. I can't imagine how heavy the 6 qt one is, and that band on it looks like it could work loose too.

STOP! BACK AWAY FROM THE GLASS BOWL! I HATE MINE! I got a new mixer when mine died. I gave the SS bowl to the woman who took my old mixer. She had hopes of fixing it. I sure wish I'd kept the bowl. The glass one is GINORMOUS and awkward to use.

This is exactly what I was thinking when Q had the recent TSV with the glass bowl and have been trying to get input on these boards from those who bought it. No responses so I was excited to see this thread. I have been looking around for a 6 Qt with stainless bowl and have found it. Although Costco has one, it has not received good reviews. I am saving my pennies for the 7 Qt commercial one at William Sonoma to replace my 5 Qt Limited Edition that is 17 years old.

When KA first showed the glass bowl........I took one look and stated to myself that I thought that the band that was around it was a set up for problems......Could be wrong......but just my 1st thoughts........plus agree with the weight problem, and I have a muscle condition that means that I need lighter.......not heavier...........

Rather than worrying about my mixer looking "pretty" with a glass or metal bowl, I'm more concerned how it works. That's why I posted the info above about the dough hooks and how well they work.

I just bought a 5-quart bowl-lift KA mixer with a SS bowl. The glass bowls are pretty, but IMO the SS bowls are much more practical. My mixer has the all-metal beater, spiral hook, and whisk and looks fine with the metal bowl, but I keep it out all the time and covered with the KA mixer cover anyway.

I have BOTH bowls. I don't keep my KA out...so looks are not important to me. My TSV KA came w/ the glass bowl. The glass bowl cracked w/in 2 wks so it was replaced for free under warranty. Have now had that one for 2 years. NO problem w/ that band. I like that I can see inside to know if I am thoroughly mixed all the way to the bottom...or if I need to scrape. Which I do more often in the glass bowl. It doesn't seem to get everything mixed especially in the deep bottom.

It IS very heavy, it IS a tad awkward to use. Also, there is NO splash guard made for the glass one. I was having a problem w/ dry ingredients POOFING back up at me and wanted the pour/splash guard. I had worn enough flour on my face!!

SO...last summer when Everything EZ Pay day came...I ordered a SS bowl and the pour/splash guard plastic thingy. The SS bowl is shaped slightly different and I find I get to the bottom better w/ this one. It is so much lighter..I find myself grabbing the SS more often. I do like having 2 bowls though...comes in handy for big projects not to have to clean one and start again.

If I could only pick one...I would pick the SS.

I have an Oster Kitchen Center mixer that I got when I got married 35 years ago. It came with two sizes of glass bowls. I still have those original bowls with no chips or anything wrong with them. I can't even imagine using a mixer with stainless bowls. But I think the quality of my glass American made bowls (back in the day) were made to last.

I'm glad I read this thread. I've been wanting the glass bowl, but I don't think I do anymore.
