The "use by date" is for an unopened product. Actually, I've eaten unopened yogurt months after the expiration date and it was fine. Once opened it gets moldy pretty fast.

@dexI think anything could go bad. Depends upon lots of factors such as how long the container is out of refrigeration, whether the spoon used is totally clean or has touched other foods or even your mouth, the temperature of your refrigerator.

Once I open anything, I try to use it up because I've always felt the date is for sealed food.

'Best By' is typically the date it needs to be sold by. I've opened/eaten greek yogurt as much as 6 mos after that date without a problem. But I didn't lt it sit for more than a couple days once opened. Just to be safe!

Depends on how it is stored after it is opened. If you are talking about the big containers wth a plastic lid - those last longer than the "best buy" date. If you are talking about a single serving with the foil cover pulled back and no other covering, not so much. You'll know it has gone bad when it smells funny, gets hard, or gets too runny.

I'm obsessed about food poisoning, having had it, terrible thing. I toss unopened yogurt if it's a week past the date. I eat about 16 oz per day. If I have an unopened qt near the date, I'll consume within a week past the date.
