I received my Honeybells today. This was the first time I've ever bought them on QVC. Mine came packed 12 per box, so they are each a good size. I could feel that each was heavy too. I ate one and it was just as juicy as shown on TV. My hands were covered with juice. The one I had was sweet too.

As for the look of them, the skins do have some random marks. That really doesn't matter to me. It's what's inside that counts and these Honeybells are delicious.

Be careful with Honeybells! They are a combination of grapefruit and tangerines.

Grapefruit is a no-no with many meds. See article below:

Grapefruit Juice: Is It Affecting Your Medication?

A nutraceutical is a food or part of a food that allegedly provides medicinal or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. Grapefruit juice has been touted as containing many compounds that can reduce hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and even the risk of cancer. Grapefruit juice can, therefore, be justifiably referred to as a classic nutraceutical. However, for many people taking certain medications, grapefruit juice might actually better be termed a "nutrapollutical!"

It turns out that grapefruit juice can directly or indirectly interact in important ways with a number of medications. This is especially important, because grapefruit juice is consumed by approximately one fifth of Americans for breakfast -- a time of the day when medications are also commonly taken.

Grapefruit juice blocks a special enzyme in the wall of the intestine that prevents many drugs from being absorbed into the body. When that enzyme is blocked, it is easier for those medications to pass from the gut into the body, raising the blood levels of these drugs. Abnormally high levels of some drugs can be dangerous and can lead to toxic side effects.

Amazingly, this remarkable food-drug interaction was discovered completely by accident over a decade ago. Researchers were investigating whether alcohol could interact with felodipine (Plendil) and used a solution of alcohol with grapefruit juice to mask the taste of alcohol for the study. Researchers discovered that blood levels of felodipine were increased several fold more than in previous studies. This increased blood level caused an increase in the effect and side effects of felodipine. Further research revealed that the grapefruit juice itself was actually increasing the amount of the study drug in the body.

Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (or bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours. Since the effects can last for such a prolonged period of time, grapefruit juice does not have to be taken at the same time as the medication in order for the interaction to occur.
Because waiting 24 hours between having grapefruit juice and taking -- sometimes daily -- medications, many people are advised not to drink grapefruit juice at all while also taking certain drugs.

The grapefruit juice-drug interaction can lead to unpredictable and hazardous levels of certain important drugs.

These are some medications with which grapefruit juice should NOT be consumed unless advised by a doctor:

Statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs): lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor, Vytorin)

Antihistamines: Ebastine

Calcium channel blockers (blood pressure drugs): felodipine (Nitrendipine, Plendil), nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia)

Psychiatric drugs: buspirone (Buspar), triazolam (Halcion), carbamazepine (Tegretol), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), sertraline (Zoloft)

Immune suppressants: cyclosporine (Neoral), (tacrolimus) Prograf

Pain medications: Methadone

Impotence drug (erectile dysfunction): sildenafil (Viagra)

Ant-HIV medication: saquinavir (Invirase)

Antiarrhythmics: amiodarone (Cordarone)

Alternatives exist for many of these drugs. If abandoning grapefruit juice is not an option, discuss the possibility of using an alternative with your doctor. And when you are starting a new medication, it is always a good idea to ask your doctor or pharmacist about any potential interactions between the new medication and foods, supplements, or other drugs you are already taking.

I, too, wondered whether honeybells interact with meds. According to the research I've done, they do NOT cause the problems that real grapefruits do and are supposedly safe to eat even if you're on statins or BP meds.

One tangerine/grapefruit hybrid (tangelos) contains trace amounts of furanocoumarins at a level too low to be associated with grapefruit/drug interactions. Journal of Food Science. 70:C419-C422. Interpretive Summary:Many medical prefessionals are recommending to patients that they do not consume grapefruit when taking certain drugs (like statin drugs including Lipitor and Zocor) due to compounds in grapefriut that prevent breakdown of these drugs. Tangerine and tangelo fruit contain grapefriut parentage and, therefore, could also possibly contain compounds that interact with drugs. These citrus relatives of grapefruit were tested and found not to contain drug-interactive compounds.

Technical Abstract: Tangelos are citrus hybrids with grapefruit and tangerine parentage and are a significant crop in Florida, marketed as specialty fruit. Because tangelos contain genetic material from grapefruit, there is the question of whether they contain furanocoumarins and exhibit an interaction with the same drugs associated with the grapefruit/drug interaction.

Authentic samples of 12 commercially grown tangelos and 2 nonhybrid tangerine varieties grown in Florida were obtained and screened for furanocoumarin monomer and dimer content. None of the tangelos or tangerines tested were found to contain any furanocoumarins. This presents evidence the commercial tangerine and tangelo varieties grown in Florida are unlikely to cause any interaction with the drugs affected by grapefruit.

Glad to hear this. Thanks for posting.

It's like everything in life.....moderation. Be sure to wash off the outside of the Honeybells before you eat them or cut into them. Think about it...you peel or slice into them. They are all treated with some kind of chemicals.

You'd be surprised how people don't think of this.

I buy them and give them to friends and people who help me during the year. People like the friends at the banks (I still go to the bank a few times a week), the UPS man and the Postman if I can catch them.

They are happy to get one and to know I am appreciative of how they do little things for me during the year. I also give them the individually wrapped cookies from QVC and the individually wrapped brownies from HSN.

Little things mean a lot to others. Some people say, "My children love these things. I'll take it home to them". I love it.

Again, moderation!

I did not order from the Q. Ordered from Gregory's Grove. Was told that they will start their shipments out next week. I suppose this will be the same with the Q orders, but not sure....

I hope they are better then the ones I got last year, one whole box was spoiled, QVC gave me my money back, the 2nd box didn't come from Fl, they came from Arizona and didn't taste like Honeybells at all, I'm about done with them.In fact the box said tangelos, too me that is false advertising.
