I have a Vitamix, but have never made my own peanut butter. My question to those that make their own is where do you buy your peanuts? I am looking for a source where you can buy them in bulk as I use a good amount of peanut butter and feel that it would be cheaper to buy larger amounts at a time.

Also, what type of peanuts are best to use; regular or dry roasted?

Thanks!

My sister gets her peanuts from nuts dot com. I think she uses the dry roasted.

She doesn't use a lot of peanut butter, so I don't know if she goes for price, but she has always been happy with the quality.

You really don't need a truckloads of peanuts to make peanut butter in your Vitamix unless you are feeding the Army.

I used a jar and a half of dry roast unsalted in the Vitamix and got about 8 ounces of p'nut butter.

But never again, what a sticky mess!

Before you invest in a large quantity of peanuts, you should make a small batch first. If I were to make it again, I would add a little bit of some kind of oil. Not sure if it's recommended in the Vitamix information.

I've made p-nut butter in my VM a couple times--all with good results--however, I think that it isn't very cost effective than buying it in the grocery stores. I used organic, roasted, salt free peanuts from bulk, didn't use any extra oil. it is a pain to get it out of the VM. I buy it from the store now for less ; No clean up either.. Tastes the same too. I buy organic, sodium free. Just read the labels at the store--should have peanuts and salt and thats all. You can use any type of nut--raw, roasted, salted, not salted or even honey.

I also make peanut butter in my Vitamix. After a few unsatisfactory attempts with several variations (dry roasted, unsalted, lightly salted, etc) I decided that I prefer salted roasted peanuts for the taste. I buy Kroger brand roasted salted peanuts for $1.99 a can. It is a chore to clean the Vitamix after making peanut butter - I haven't found a solution for that!

I use a 16 oz jar of Planters Lightly Salted Dry Roasted Peanuts to make peanut butter. I don't add any oil or anything else.

It's easier to get out if you let the Vitamix run longer. It gets thinner but I keep mine in the refrigerator.

After I scrape out as much as I can with a long spatula jar scraper I make some kind of smoothie or shake so it's easier to clean out the container.

Just put some hot soapy water in it & let it run. You might have to do that twice.

Thanks, everyone! I think it's wise for me to take your advice and experiment with a few different types of peanuts before going hog wild and buying a huge amount. I'm sorry to hear that the Vitamix is a pain to clean after making peanut butter, but I'll give it a shot and see if it's worth it to me.

My preference is valencia peanuts which I can't find locally. I didn't like the peanuts the stores here carry. I decided in the long run to just buy the Kirkland natural peanut butter from Costco because it's just valencia peanuts and salt.

I buy peanut flour. It's defatted and 88% of the fat is removed so it's low calorie. All I do is add a little water to it and make a spread. Directions are on the bag. Simple. You can also bake with it. Not to be confused with those popular peanut powder products which contain sugar and other things. This one is 100% peanuts, minus the fat.

At least that's the way I have always known it to be. Although some cows produce milk with more than 4 percent milk fat, commercial milk has the above fat content standards in it.

Back in the day, a lot of milk was higher fat from different breeds of cows and wow was it good!

I have made peanut butter in my Vitamix, then I make a banana smoothie before I clean itout and that gets it pretty clean, then just hot water and soap and whiz it's clean. I just buy it ground at the local natural foods store. They keep fresh ground and it is so good and so easy!

Hi. I only made cashew butter, once. It was a little rough on the motor but I put too much in there. It was smooth perfection, but I agree with those who said it's not worth the hassle. My favorite peanut butter the past year or so has been Santa Cruz dark roasted, which I buy from vitacost when it's on sale. It's so flavorful! Just love it. All natural too. Trader Joe's is all natural, good and a really good price as well! Just my two cents. I have to have peanut butter around. Almond butter too.

I buy all my raw, organic nuts from Whole Foods. I like doing peanut butter with cashews or pecans. Two ingredients... that's it! I'm a cancer fighting nutritionist and my patients love fresh nut butters and filling, protein and nutritious. I've also made almond Butter and make my own almond milk. Soak the raw almonds overnight in h20 ( any nuts actually) and use filtered h20 and make my own milk. No more better nutritious milk than that. It cannot get any simple than that! Enjoy.
