So UPS dumped a damaged box of my favorite Ferris Nuts snacks I have on auto ship from HSN in my lobby....not stolen at least...but they must have sat in the hot West sun for hours cuz at 11 pm after work the box and contents were very hot Still! The lobby probably gets as hot as 120 degrees as it is 90 here...I left the door open for UPS and the could not even take them to my door!

Do you think they are safe to Eat? Please no mean answers. I am older and do not want to get sick. Thank You! BTW, QVC comes by US mail which is much better.

Yes, I would eat them with no qualms. Dried fruit and nuts don't readily grow bacteria. I think people are paranoid over food safety and could easily eat a lot that's thrown away.

I wouldn't eat them.

Danger zone (food safety) The temperature range in which food-borne bacteria can grow is known as the danger zone. Food safety agencies, such as the United States' Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), define the danger zone as roughly 4 to 60 °C (39 to 140 °F).

Dried fruit & nuts are not PHF (potentially hazardous foods) like meat and dairy, so the danger zone doesn't pertain to them. Similar to things like cookies and candy which are frequently at ambient temperatures in that range. Think the temperature of your kitchen. It's probably not below 41 degrees F, but there are many foods stored at "room temperature ".

I am food safety certified for my job and do food safety inspections at my company.

However, if you are concerned at all, I would do as suggested--call HSN and get a refund or replacement and don't eat.

After sitting at that temp, my thought would be more that the texture or taste would be off more than bacteria forming.

Call HSN. They should send a replacement. I would also call UPS and file a complaint about the box being crushed and left in a very hot lobby. You can have them add a note to your address for deliveries to be made to the door of your apartment versus just the unmanned and super hot lobby. You may also connect with a neighbor who could pick up the item from wherever UPS leaves it. You could then just pop in and pick it up. Also, you could have it delivered to your work for pickup when you get there. I've done this a few times when things need signing for. I work in a high security job, so there are steps to go through to get a package for me delivered, but even I can do it. Just something to consider.

I ordered food from a vendor in New York. UPS delivered it in So California with 95 degree heat and never even rang the door bell and the package sat on my porch until I discovered it many hours later! Had to throw everything in the cooler out as the dry ice had melted and the food was soggy and melted. The vendor gave me a refund but I would much have rather had the items I ordered frozen and edible! UPS are useless!
