Salt & Pepper shakers

I recently got a new gas range. So I wanted some melt proof salt & pepper shakers for cooking, plus I wanted larger ones so I did not have to fill them so often. I looked on line, and at Walmart and did not find what I was looking for and large ones were expensive.. So I bought a set of Jam size ball jars, had hubby drill holes in the lid, and now they are perfect. Just thought I would pass this along in case anyone else had this problem.

Nice idea. Better get a patent. Sounds like a million dollor idea!

I have mason jars w/handles & screw on tops. Wonder if I could the same w/them?

I've never melted my salt & pepper shakers. How does that happen?

My only problem is humidy regarding the salt shaker. Rice solved that problem for me.

My shakers are pretty large. They are oxo shakers which I got from BBB.

Well that was a good move. I was going to say just make sure what you buy the holes are large enough the salt/pepper can sprinkle out of. I bought some that had such small holes in them.

Did you use the jars with the handles on them?

Mine are glass so they won't melt. Plus I have a pepper grinder.

@Mz iMac My sister made me a salt & pepper set out of the green Ball jars with handles. I think she just used a nail to put the holes in the tops.

7 holes in the salt shaker & 10 holes in the pepper lid.

I love them. They hold a lot of salt & pepper & shake out the perfect amount.

As are mine. I thought all salt & pepper shakers were glass of some kind. That is why I don't understand how the OP shakers melted?

I have an electric grinder because I use rock sea salt & peppercorns.

I have melted a plastic set buy setting them on the stove, not the burner, but on the surrounding area. Not to bright on my part. I guess you could consider me a cheapskate, I could not justify $20.00 for S&P shakers. I used the ones without the handles, they are short and squat. You could use any of the ball/mason jars, but I liked the jam ones.

@Mz iMac I used to have some old tupperware plastic salt/pepper shakers. I prefer the glass.

I collect range shakers made during the Depression up through the 50's. They are glass and quite large. Prices range from a couple dollars through the hundreds. Most are colored milk glass in white, jadite (light green) and black. These things are sturdy and last forever. Available on Ebay, Etsy, and your local antique mall. Search range shakers or kitchen shakers. Main brands are McKee, Jeannette, and Anchor Hocking.

i keep glass salt and pepper shakers near the stove AND a salt grinder and pepper grinder. if you google salt and pepper shakers or check amazon, etsy, ebay, or pretty much any home store you should easily be able to find glass salt and pepper shakers.
