Found Stored Food Beyond Date

I was decluttering and I found some stored food way beyond the date. I am aware if it were cereal it would be no good (for example). I found salad dressing sealed and wrapped and a sealed large container of chocolate-capacino powder. Both were 2011. I know I should have looked or found it sooner. Should I just toss them out?

I will toss them out. What was I thinking!!! I guess I just did not notice. It is a large pantry and I just was storing thinking of a harsh winter and really paid no attention.

@bonnielu I would toss the items.Expiration dates are unregulated & somewhat arbitrary.Depending on the item I might go a year passed the expiration date.Because these are food items I wouldn't take any chances.Over time ingredients can break down & bacteria can get in.It's better to be safe than sorry.

The cost of seeing a doctor for food poisoning far exceeds the cost of these items. Pitch them.

I rarely care about a month or two or three, but 6 years??? I'd have to be desperate enough to also be dumpster diving for my food. I vote to toss them.

@bonnielu I would toss something that was that old but I did read that we toss out too much good food because of those dates.They are going to try to change that but I can't remember all of the details.I had a can that was a year past date and decided that the can looked fine so I opened and dumped contents out to inspect them and the cans interior...all looked well so I decided to eat it.We were fine but prior to reading that article I would have tossed that.I wouldn't say that the nutritional content was as high as if consumed before the date though.

The old saying............when in doubt - throw it out.

Heck, I trash can soups - broth - some veggies every Fall when I go throw my winter stock. No guilt here for throwing food out cuz I'm mighty glad to have supplies on hand when a blizzard hits.

Trash it that stuff is old. If you had ever had food poisoning before you would not have to ask that. I have had it so I don't eat old food or food left sitting on the counter too long or foods that have been in the refrigerator too long etc.

Trust me you don't want food poisoning.

Eating OLD food is not a good thing! <G> (Martha Stewart would agree I am sure)

In this house I have a rule of THREE that works.

* Eat the item of food within three days or...FREEZE IT...or TOSS IT.

canned food 6 years old is not at all worth the danger risk.

sometimes i will take a bit of mask tape and sharpie and note date i purchased and stick on can of food or soup. this helps manage the food i put on the home shelves.

and... i try to bring the older cans forward and put newer to the back when possible.

sometimes I just have to go thru and clear out OLD CANS. CAT

Do you think that canned goods that have been kept in a fairly cool environment, in a cabinet (dark), that have a date of a month, 2 months, 3 months, ago would be ok?

I volunteer at a food bank and our rule of thumb is a year expired except for baby food.

Normally, I say yes but recently had a bout of flu.

Couped up at home is okay, I keep a deep pantry but when I grabbed Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup it was 6 months past the date.

Heated it up and the taste was bad. Really bad. I tossed the remaining 2 cans.

I came up with a great system for me & my pantry. I rarely have expired items & some things don't have expiration stamped on them, I.e., can goods. My personal rule of thumb is 1 year for canned goods & flour, sugar, etc. I clearly have marked:date filled & exp date from mfg.

When I come home from shopping any item placed in my pantry I mark the month/year with marker on box/can.

After seeing the waste (about 2 years ago) I decided to only buy limited BOGO offers & not stock-up my pantry anymore. I only live 15 min from store & if I'm planning on cooking I usually Sunday

have a idea what I'll be making.

This system has has saved me lots of wasted $$$$ this past few years.

I normally only need baking supplies refreshed each November when I start my holiday baking YET I think those days are coming to a end. No one here to enjoy them & we are going to start a new tradition baking at my nieces home and doing a fun weekend!

I keep a marker in the kitchen and put the date on everything that has a "use by, best by or exp date" on it. Any item put in a plastic container is labeled and dated.
