I used to work with a lady many many years ago, she was my " grandma " and she made the most amazing chocolate cake. She would always make it with peanut butter icing, which I don't care for, so for my birthday she made this icing. When .I make it I always think of my friend Mrs J.

I like to make the cooked frosting with flour also, it kind of reminds me of the filling in a Hostess cupcake. Wisk 5 tbsp. flour with 1 cup milk in a saucepan on the stove. Cook while stirring till the flour mixture gets very thick, like paste. Take off the stove and let cool to room temp, which doesn't take to long. I use a stand mixer to cream 1 cup butter and 1 cup granulated sugar until fluffy, then add 1 teasp vanilla and the flour milk mixture. Continue to beat the mixture until it gets fluffy like a whipped cream consistency, this will take a few minutes. This frosting is so good and no need to refrigerate it. Holds up very well.

Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker prepared icings in different flavors. I would so take a short cut, but I'm not an icing lover. Presonally, I prefer a quality cream cheese frosting with less sugar than most recipes call for. I would top with different things from the sprinkle section. Kids LOVE SPRINKLES! The icing is mearly a material for attaching the sprinkles. Kids also don't care what kind of icing it is, just that is the socially acceptable drug called sugar!

Have been making it for many years but never connected it with Twinkies - have always called it French Buttercream.
