@violann, you said Shop-Rite! How I miss those stores. We lived in NJ until we moved to FL in 2009, and there's nothing like SR down here (there are supermarkets, sure, but you can't beat SR's prices or the variety of store-brand products -- or the quality and cariety of the items they carry in their meat and fish departments). I worked for one of our local stores for 5 years in high school and college, and my husband was a department manager for them for 38 years (yeah, that's where we met).

I used to boil my corned beef (as infrequently as I made it -- my husband isn't a fan, really) and I did it in the oven once. This year, I did it in the pressure cooker, and it was the best I've ever made.

That recipe does look very good, however, for me there are too many steps to go thru. Hands/fingers don't work well and I broke my wrist in January, so the easier the better for me. Am going to use my pressure cooker. Found a recipe that makes more sense than one I used before. Love me some corned beef!!!

I made one on Tuesday, although I should have waited for the sales. The thing costs a fortune!

I put it in the slow cooker with pickling spices, the seasoning packet, a head of garlic, about a tablespoon of brown sugar and enough water to cover. Cooked on low for six hours. I took it out, added carrots to the broth and made a brown sugar and yellow mustard topping to put on the corned beef and put it in a hot oven(350 degrees) for 15 to 20 minutes till golden brown on top. I cooked the cabbage in bacon fat adding crushed bacon on top. I mashed the potatoes after boiling with garlic and added Kerrygold herbed butter and milk to them. We also had Irish soda bread. It was delicious! I'll make another for St. Patrick's Day.

I will simmer 2 of the corned beef with the seasoning packets for a few hours. I boil the potatoes and cabbage separately. What we love the most are the leftovers: Reuben's for a few days!

I simmer with the spices, take out a bit early as I don't like it to be dry. I put potatoes and cabbage in the liquid and add the meat to warm up.

Love, love, love with vinegar.

I try to find one with a spice packet to add, not the ones already soaking in the spices in with the meat because it is too salty. I don't add the spice packet, cook in the crockpot all day starting with a bit of water. It's not plain and boring to us. Steam the vegetables in another pot, or we might have warm Reubens sandwiches with a vegetable.

I probably won't. DH and I decided we really don't care much for it much. It could be that I have never cooked it right but along with my quest for making a delicious home made pie crust and a tasty corned beef meal-- I give up!

For me due to HBP I have cultivated a low sodium diet and I just don't think DH cares for the spices. We both like lightly steamed cabbage and Gourmets will cover thier ears , but I will use a sprinkle of canned corned beef with it. If I go to a good deli I like Reuben sandwich occasionally.

@Carmie & @RedTop I agree.

I use my pressure cooker and prefer it to the slow cooker method. The spices are infused throughout the meat...yum!

Also, Wegman's has an interesting recipe on their corned beef packages that involves some simmering, followed by baking.

I think too much liquid cooks the flavor out of the beef.

I rinse it and then put it in the crockpot. I make mashed potatoes and saute the cabbage with onions.

We only buy JP O'Reilly's flat cut and I don't use the package of spices included. I don't like it floating around.
