Yep, it's been proven to be especially helpful and comforting for a cold and other related stuff.

Not just homemade, although it's healthier since you can control the sodium content.

This extra special, passed-down creation is from a physician/researcher's Lithuanian grandma-in-law.

It's known for being extra tasty and extra healing. 8)

Any foods and beverages that have worked for you, your family, or friends?

------

Grandma's Chicken Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

1 5- to 6-pound stewing hen or baking chicken

1 package of chicken wings

3 large onions

1 large sweet potato

3 parsnips

2 turnips

11 to 12 large carrots

5 to 6 celery stems

1 bunch of parsley

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Clean the chicken, put it in a large pot and cover it with cold water. Bring the water to boil.

2. Add the chicken wings, onions, sweet potato, parsnips, turnips and carrots. Boil about 1 and a half hours. Remove fat from the surface as it accumulates.

3. Add the parsley and celery. Cook the mixture about 45 min. longer.

4. Remove the chicken. The chicken is not used further for the soup. (The meat makes excellent Chicken Parmesan.)

5. Put the vegetables in a food processor until they are chopped fine or pass through a strainer. Both were performed in the present study.

6. Add salt and pepper to taste.

(Note: This soup freezes well.)

Matzo balls were prepared according to the recipe on the back of the box of matzo meal (Manischewitz).

Super quick- I have recently been buying chicken BONE BROTH and chopped spinach/kale at BJs, and delicious chicken meatballs at Costco.

I bring the broth just to a boil, throw in the meatballs and simmer them per package directions, and then add the greens.

I love the greens to be wilted, still a little crispy, so as soon as they're added, I turn off the burner and cover the vessel they're in until they've gotten just to where I like them, then stick the container back on a hot burner to rewarm the broth.

Super super quick, but tastes like I sweated over the hot stove FOR HOURS!!!

A neighbor gave me her family recipe for chicken matzo ball soup about 30 years ago, after she brought it to me when my father died. It was a very difficult time for me, and this was just about the only thing I could manage to eat. The recipe starts with a whole chicken and uses homemade matzo balls and tons of dill. It takes two days to make, because you have to simmer the whole chicken with veggies to make the broth and then cool, chill and skim the fat. It is my go-to soup to take to sick friends and neighbors.

Another useful tip I got from a co-worker is, when you start to feel that "I think I'm getting sick" feeling, drink hot apple cider. I thought she was crazy until I tried it, and it worked.
