I Discovered Farm Eggs!

First time ever, in my continued effort to get away from the gawd awful grocery stores I bought farm eggs. Fresh, clean, dated and $1/doz for large eggs in the carton.

The difference in taste & quality is noticeable. Couldn't beat the price.

Next week, I'll ask to meet the girls 😆

I LOVE pasture raised eggs! They are the BEST!

Pasture raised is NOT the same thing as "cage free".

All cage free means is that the hens are not in tiny pens to lay their eggs, but they are still inclosed in a (slightly) larger pen.

Pasture raised, means that the hens actually go outside in to the fresh air and sunshine, and eat bugs and stuff, just like they are ment to do!

This is the brand that I like.

Yes, it's more expensive, but to me, it's worth the extra $ for better eggs.

I live rural and a couple of my coworkers encouraged me to try them.

In my quest I've learned not all breeds of chickens lay year round. Esp up here in the dead of winter!

@Snowpuppy,How,wonderful! if you bake they add a richness to everything!My husband has outside company so one of our customers trades us several dozens a week for my fresh banana bread.. my husband gets a giggle knowing the ladies, the hens personally. one even laid an egg in our employees sweatshirt on the ground after he got warm wnd took it off... enjoy your new goodies !Maryanne

A few years ago a friend had chickens. Henrietta laid the best eggs ever! I baked all the time when i had her eggs. Then a fox repeatedly broke in to the henhouse, and it was so sad. And yes the taste was so much richer!! Dont have a source these days. 😔

How I would love to get my hands on some eggs from hens that are allowed to roam free on the land. I grew up on a farm on a mountain and those eggs were the best. The hens didn't lay all that many eggs, but that flavor was awesome.

chickens need to scratch and pick for worms and bugs which make the eggs so rich and flavorful.

I have some relatives who have their own chickens. The eggs are fantastic. The yolks are larger, yolks have a darker color, and the flavor is great. The one thing I can't get past is that one of them stores her eggs out on the counter. Supposedly it's safe as long as they get used within a few weeks, but I've got a mental block about that. I know they eat eggs a lot but sometimes they have to sell the excess or give them away.

My source keeps them refrigerated at 40 degrees. Law mandates egg cartons are marked with two dates.

The first date is a 3 digit number that is the day of the year the egg was produced. 001 is Jan 1, 002 is Jan 2. Second date is sell by date. You should use them within 30 days of the 3 digit date.

I get the free range aspect but with snowcover on the ground here 4-6 months a year I would be skeptical of claims and the higher costs. At least here, locally.

I have had chickens all my adult life. The eggs are richer. The deeper yellow is from corn, home grown hens are generally feed more corn.

I buy eggs at store to hard boiled, fresh eggs to not peel.

Also home grown usually have harder she'll.

White chickens never lay brown eggs, but a few breeds of colored hens will lay a white. I also have a bantam breed that lays green eggs. Not getting many eggs right now, cold and less day light.

I no longer buy my eggs from the grocery store. We now live rural and I buy from my local farmers. I've never really tasted a drastic difference in the taste of local eggs vs. grocery store eggs though. An egg is an egg. At least my eggs come from chickens that have a name.

Farm fresh eggs are the best, the yolks are a rich golden color and are excellent for baking, We have 6 hens and I call them my little bitties and they all have names, the girls have free range during the day and go in their coop at night. They are very comical to watch and all have their own personalities

Me too!!!

It is important that people not confuse free range with cage free. Cage free is meaningless as they are still confined to tiny areas. Look for free range, organic, antibiotic free, etc. Also, avoid Amish eggs. Visualize their puppy mills and apply it to chickens. Sometimes they try to claim they are cage free as a selling point. Don't be fooled.

I also buy local farm eggs when they are available.

My farm eggs are often double yolk.

I can remember as a child finding a double yolk or 2 in each dozen but I haven't seen a double yolk in years until I started buying from the farm.

Every once in a while I will get a double yolker from jumbos.
