Reusable Grocery Bags

I've been trying to be more ecologically responsible & using reusable fabric/canvas grocery bags rather than bringing home the store's plastic bags. Does anyone have any hints on how to keep them neatly in the car, so they aren't strewn all over the place? Do you roll them up & tie them together with something? I have an SUV, so I've been keeping them in the back seat, but it looks kind of untidy to me.

DH does our grocery shopping and he just brings things home in the plastic bags from Publix. He stores them in the garage and periodically takes them back for recycling. I have no problem with that.

I just fold mine up and put them all in one bag on the floor of my back seat.

@aubnwa01 I do the same thing. I fold them up and put them in one bag and they are in my trunk. But I do accept the store's plastic bags. I put them in a trash cans all over the house in the bottom and put one bag over the top to collect trash. In any case I use everything

I was using the plastic bags for cleaning out my kitty's litter box, but she went to the rainbow bridge in early Nov., so I'm not using them right now. The reason I decided to start using the reusable bags (which I already had) was I went thru where I stuffed all of the plastic bags in my garage & had 9 bags stuffed with other bags when I was done! I still have 3 bags to take to be recycled when I go to the store.

I purchased a folding trunk organizer which also has a thermal zip bag for cold items. I keep my store recycle bags in there. Fully open it has 3 sections. I put gallons of milk and water in a compartment so they do not tip over and spill. Any plastic bags I get from other stores I use for cat litter and to line small waste baskets in the bathroom and bedrooms. Many of our stores have a box in the front entrance to place used clean plastic bags to be recycled. I have gifted my family members the trunk organizers and they love them.

I am so sorry about the loss of your cat. We have cats, so I love the plastic grocery bags for scooping their litter. If it weren't for that, I would do what you are doing and use the canvas ones full time. We have several canvas totes which we use when we can see that we have plenty of plastic bags in their under- sink bin. We keep the canvas ones folded behind the driver's seat of the car we use most often.

Thanks, LibbyAnnE, for your kind thoughts. She was a black & white Maine Coon & only 7½ years old & it seemed like overnight she developed a large mass on her liver. She'd been OK at her most recent vet checkup in July, so it seemed like it came out of nowhere.

The 1st month was the worst, it was like a physical pang in my chest when I thought of her, but it's easing, though I still miss her terribly. I thought I'd have her with me for many years, but alas, sadly that wasn't to be.

Ah yes, plastic bags were my favorite souvenier from Florida because we can't get them from the stores in CA anymore.

I am sorry about the loss of your kitty @aubnwa01. We reused our plastic bags in multiple ways and one was to hold scooped litter from our cats.

As you're currently doing, I keep about 4 reusable bags in my car, folded up neatly and placed in the pocket of the seat backs.

I have (and have gifted) a really large Lock & Lock insulated cooler bag (K43917) which I keep in the back seat of our truck. I fold up several other reusable grocery bags and keep them inside this cooler bag. Everything stays "together" and I can easily transfer all of them to the grocery cart/my car or store in the trunk. I also have one of those 3 dived trunk/seat organizers. I like it a lot. I have a friend who had a bottle of Lime Away tip over in her car and "eat" a big hole in the carpet. That organizer really helps to keep bottles standing up and not rolling all over the trunk/floor!

I hope I never have to give up the plastic bags I get at the grocery store! I have no idea what I'd do with the cat litter when I scoop daily!!

LIke those of you with cats, I use the plastic bags for litter. I also keep any bread/bun bags or any other kinds of bags for litter. We have six litter boxes that we scoop twice a day.

I use Trader Joe's resusable bags for most of our grocery shopping until I run low on plastic bags. Then I start bringing home plastic bags again. We keep the TJ's bags in the back of our car, so they're always available.

I use LOQI reusable bags. They're very strong and hold a lot. They fold up and are stored in a zippered pouch. I have used these for years and ordered them from Amazon. They come as a set of 4. They are easily stored in the side pocket of my car beside the driver's seat. They also don't take up a lot of room and could possibly be kept in your handbag.

Amazon also sells Envirosax, which come in a set of 5 and are the same type of bag.

I too am in CA and have to use reusable bags. I just read how they are full of bacteria after a few uses. I think I have to wash mine, what a waste of water.

I use the disposable grocery bags for trash bags, like another poster mentioned. I live alone, not a lot of trash.

And for cleaning out the litter boxes!

I also have a couple of reusable bags that I used sometimes depending on what store I'm at and what I'm purchasing. If I only need a few things, I'll bring in the reusable, drop my items in as I shop then unload it at the check-out.

Ever so often I find myself with more disposables than I need, they go back to the store into their recycle bin.

All of mine fold flat, so I just have them in a nice, flat stack on the passenger seat.

The reason I keep them up front is because not only am I usually the only one in my vehicle, but when I had them in the back I would forget to bring some into the store, then get mad at myself for messing up. This way, they are right next to me in a neat pile so I can just grab however many I need du jour.
