I thought it had to do with what type of food item it was and the state. I think of the apples as falling into the candy category versus fruit. Typically, candy is taxed.

The issue may be more complex.

Yes, some states charge tax on producs like this. There could also be an issue with the tax imposed due to the order being on the phone. For instance, I know that some people get charged tax on HSN purchases if made by phone but not if done online. This has to do with the location of the employees and is not something I know a lot about as I have not been impacted.

If the OP is interested, perhaps she should post something in the custoer service forum, indiating that the product she was going to purchase and stating that she was charged tax when placing the order by phone but not when doing it online. I am sure one of the mods would be happy to look into it.

In any event, I seriously doubt this is a nefarious plot on the part of the person taking the order. The system is set up to charge tax automatically in certain circumstances. The rep does not get the extra money -- QVC does not get the extra money. This money is imposed by your state, and QVC hires teams of accountants to make sure they are in compliance. If a mistake has been made,. I am sure they will be happy to correct it.

Where I live there is a tax on prepared food. So things you buy at the grocery store that you can just open and eat - are taxed. For instance If I buy tomatoes and all the fixins to make spaghetti sauce that is not taxed but if I buy a jar of spaghetti sauce it is taxed as a prepared food, because it is ready to heat & eat. Same if I buy a package of tortillas or a jar of salsa.

I generally buy the majority of my clothing in the summer when we are at camp - mostly because summer clothing is what I need and partly because clothing is not taxed in Pa.
