    <description>&lt;P&gt;Wooden spoons are just as safe as wooden cutting boards which are as safe (if not safer) than plastic.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;If there are major cracks which allow food to get trapped, perhaps they should be discarded.&amp;nbsp; I, personally, run my wooden spoons right through the dishwasher (including the olive wood ones) with no problems, but I also oil them all a least once a month with mineal oil.&lt;/P&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;P&gt;When they crack, do you throw yours away?&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;I do, just don't know what could be growing in there and I don't want to put them in a bleach solution.&lt;/P&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;P&gt;That's a good idea, GCR.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;I also wouldn't use them in cooking. &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;The only wooden spoons I have are olive wood and I highly recommend that. &amp;nbsp; Sure, it's not the cheapest, but if you take care of them (it's pretty easy care!), they will last beautifully forever.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;My oldest olive wood spoon is decades old and it's in perfect condition. &amp;nbsp; It has darkened, but that's just acceptable patina.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Too bad that Chef's Catalog is gone. &amp;nbsp;I got some positively stunning olive wood spoons, and such, there that I absolutely love.&lt;/P&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;P&gt;One of the areas I taught was Food Science. &amp;nbsp;You don't want to know what grows in those cracks even though wood retains bacteria, today there are many mutations of bacteria strains.&lt;/P&gt;</description>
