Unless one shops at Aldi, it is unlikely one is familiar with this brand.

Aldi, like its sister company Trader Joe's (each owned by different branches of the same family), specializes in private label merchandise which is made specifically for the respective store.

Try the ice cream -- or anything else -- if it sounds good. They offer a moneyback guarantee if you are not happy with any product.

I picked up 2 different flavors of the Belmont brand Gelato & threw them in the trash. Most would have ate it but it was not what I was looking for. They used to carry Priano brand Gelato that was delish. IMO the Belmont did not taste like Gelato. I have not bought any other Belmont brand items. I have bought a lot of the Specially Selected & all has been good other then a few chocolate truffle flavors we did not care for. LOL!!! I know I have bought some Premium but don't remember what they were. I love their Specially Selected Sea Salt Caramels. Just picked up a container today.

We've had an Aldi's in our area for about 15 years, so I think I can say with confidence, that these brands are Aldi's brand names that are made by big companies. As you shop there more you will be able to tell which items are brand names with a different label. Sometimes you can even tell by the color of the label that it resembles. Also they change vendors from time to time too. So it's a hard call to say exactly which vendors they use.

Those are a specialty value that run on a limited edition during the Summer. They're lemonade, cherry, and then I think like a blue raspberry flavor, or something like that. Yummy!

I tell people who aren't familiar with Aldi to keep an open mind when they go. It's a different shopping experience from the regular grocery store. I didn't care for it at first but it grew on me! I am not a person who is tied to brand names. There are very few things that I have to have that are brands. So, for me, this store is perfect. I don't mind trying different things and I am willing to try off brands and their brand to save money. I have rarely been disappointed in anything purchased there. On the rare occasion that something has been less than satisfatory, I simply return. They give you no problem. My theory is --- you won't know unless you try!

People might be apprehensive when it comes to trying Aldi's brand food but really, it is quite good and tastes like the name brand. Of course there are some things which can not repliate the big name products but for the most part, they really do. I'm far from cheap (maybe frugal) but I hit Aldi's because what I buy meets my approval. Produce is good although the selection is small. Meats are also tasty whether the gourmet (non frozen) high end burgers or chick and beef for the smoker.

I live in the Chicagoland area, and I know for a fact that Aldi's ice cream is made by Deans, a quality brand name in our area. They carry the same flavors of ice cream that Deans has. Their milk very possibly come from them also. How do I know this? Because I have seen the Deans delivery semi in Aldi's loading dock on more than one occasion.

I can vouch for the Aldi's 1/2 & 1/2, and for the boxed set of 4 heads of baby lettuce, 2 red lettuce, 2 green. Both of these are favorably comparable to supermarket brands.

The Balsamic Vinegar is, to my tongue, HORRIBLE, and I won't buy it again. Never been in one before so I was looking for information about whether thay are just another supermarket or if there's something special about them. Your comment about people being apprehensive has be curious--why be apprehensive about a grocery store? Are they weird in some way? Is it a warehouse kind of place, or ? I feel like I remember shopping at Aldi when I was staying in Germany, but I might not be remembering correctly. The shop was rather small, with produce out front like Sprout's, but a lot of local products, which I liked. Any info you might share? Thanks!

I always wince when the oranges get tossed on top of the parsley!

I just went to look at their flyer for the week. Some of the prices are the same as elsewhere, but there are a few items that are real bargains if the quality is good too.

@KaySD I hope you enjoy shopping there and if you have any additional questions please feel free to ask!

I did go there when it was just opened. There was a coupon to get $5 off you spent 30. I had my son with me and really didn't need much. Just wanted to see what it was like. Really small compared to other stores. It is right across from Walmart so I don't know if it will make it. It is at one end of the city and I am at the other where th ere are more stores to go to so I probably won't go unless I am near and something real special.

@KaySD wrote:

Hi, @ULY, I just found out there's an Aldi's near me. Thanks!

The store is rather generic looking and people tend to judge things on appearance. Both inside and out are rather dull and not overly inviting IMO but the products are worth the money. If people can get over the lack of flash and panache, it's a great store. Aldi's is German owned which is why you will see German specialty products being sold. Not every product I purchased was something I'd buy again but 99% of what I have purchased was great. As an example, it sells lactose free milk that is better than any other brand (named or generic) that I've tried. Their branded cookies taste just like the obes made by the girl scouts, those elves, etc..,
