Where Do the Shrimp Come From?

They had shrimp on today (Sunday) but I didn't hear them say where they come from and the description I saw didn't say. Are they from Asia? Did you hear anything about whre they are sourced? THANKS!

Excellent question. Where are they from, and are they wild or farm raised ? That kind of information should be required for all food items, especially seafood.

I would be shocked if they were actually wild caught in the US. They are most likely farmed and probably in Asia. I went to what I think is the vendors website and saw a blurb on sustainability but not one word on sourcing.

Anderson Seafoods has their headquaters in Anaheim, CA and I don't remember CA having commercial shrimp boats when I lived there.

It's too bad they don't qualify the source of the shrimp. For that reason, as I figure if they were from the US they would be shouting it from the rooftops, I would be led to believe that they are from SE Asia.

I have tried to eat shrimp from SE Asia. One time I purchased some from the grocery store and, like an idiot, didn't look for the source info on the packaging. The problem for me was that it made my throat close up.

I am NOT allergic to shrimp or anything, as I love shrimp. But I find that I cannot consume shrimp from Southeast Asia without problems.

@jaxs mom. I also went to what I think is their website & looked uner the shrimp category in the column on the left. Theycited several locations but didn't specify any one source. So it sounds like it could come from anywhere. No help whatsoever.

Shrimp (and any fish) from Asia are farmed in terribly dirty/unsanitary water. Like the slums.The people live in houseboats with poor sanitation.

No idea about now, but there were dozens of commercial shrimpers along the San Diego docks when I was there. Mybe they are all out now?

I'm sure these aren't from the US like you all guessed. It is sad because QVC would be a great source for our own seafood, and offer an alternative to the mostly Asian stuff the big box stores sell.

And price? We buy USA shrimp for anywhere from $15 to $19 a pound--sometimes less and we stock up when we find them on sale. I have gotten very picky about seafood and only order it in a restaurant when they tell me it is USA product--and I have some hope of that being true! LOL!!

Pay attention closely...... it is extremely rare when Q actually qualifies where any of the meat, fish or where the food comes from . They will say where it is made.

It is nice to see more buyers concerned about the quality of the processed food they are way over paying for.

Actually if you have ever bought food from Q it never looks like what is being presented.

Very Scary.

Went into their website it said shrimp is from Thailand,Mexico,India &Vietnam. Go into their website don't know if I am allowed to tell you the site in here. They are farm raised.

Anderson's Seafodd website has a catalog that comes up in PDF form. The shrimp is tiger shrimp, that's what Meredith said on-air. Most shrimp are farm raised. I saw a documentary about raising shrimp and they used artificial insemination on a female shrimp in a lab setting. It said that she can then lay up to a million, yes, a million eggs.

In a controlled environment, without predators, the survival rate is really high and makes it worth the effort......and keeps shrimp at a price we can all afford.

There are the shrimp farmers, mainly from South America and Southeast Asia,
