Run on pumpkin?

I couldn't find one can of that Libby's Pumpkin Pie mix Thurs. at the Walmart or the United. The one where all you add is one can of evap. milk and 2 eggs.

It's not Nov.-Dec. wonder why it's not on the shelves this time of yr.?

Another thing that has been scarce is cauliflower. I love it and the last two times I grocery shopped there was none to be found. I read recently that there was a shortage and I'm bummed.

There is, indeed, a shortage of pumpkin. I remember seeing a report on the news around October that the pumpkin crop in Illinois, which produces about 90% of the pumpkin supply in the U.S, was wiped out by last summer's heavy rains. Because the supply ran out, you probably won't find any pumpkin anywhere until the next harvest this coming fall.

Got those cans of that other kind out there. The flat no sugar or spice cans, which I guess you have to Dr. up yourself which is better then nothing.

I always liked the make up of the darker cans. Hard to gauge how much this and that you have to put in when you use 'raw' pumpkin.

I have never used the pie filling type. I want to add my own ingredients. That being said, I make it for others since I am NOT a pumpkin fan.

I always purchase the regular pumpkin puree, not the 'mix' ones but it probably applies to any of it that there seems to be a shortage every year for the past few years.

What I do is to buy a year's worth each fall, when it first comes out plentiful again. I use it for the dog, as well as the occasional baking.

I have always used the plain Libby's pumkin and follow the recipe that is on the label. If you find some other brand of pumpkin, the Libby's recipe is online. It is very good.

I have never tried the "pie filling". I should do that sometime.

Yeah, my observation has been that the pumpkin products start coming in during early Fall. That's when to snag all you'll need.

I usually buy 25-30 cans and I have enough for the puppy's pumpkin in his breakfast (just a spoonful each day), the birdie bread I make for the bird, and any baking I may do for the humans, for the whole year.

For many years there was never a problem getting it all year long but in the last few years they started running out because of problems with the weather causing smaller harvests.

Sure must not grow them in Tx. rain is not one of my problems here in Amarillo hahahhahaha I did manage to keep the jacks off my Forsynthia bush transplanted it to my patio area. Now I can enjoy it here in March.

I was at Walmart yesterday and they had both Libby's pumpkin puree (you add milk and eggs) and a whole bin of cauliflower.

Maybe new crop cauliflower is coming in. I saw some for the first time a few weeks ago, at a good price and bought it.

Pumpkin--it's monocropped for commercial production, which is to say it is grown primarily in Illinois and Wisconsin and Libby buys all the farmers' crops to make their canned pumpkin. One type, and thus crop failure happens when weather or disease threaten the limited area and type.

We grow plenty of pumpkin locally but it's not always the pie type. In fact, it's occasionally grown right across the street from my development. Love seeing the gold in the fields. But preparing pumpkin puree is time consuming and it's not suitable for home canning (even pressure canners do not get hot enough to safely can puree. Home canners have to pressure can chunks of pumpkin.)

My dogs eat a can of it now and then for tummy problems (like, getting into stuff they shouldn't that gives them the runs.) I like to stock up on dozens of cans but it's a haul from the store. However, you never know when they will be out of it due to these issues.
