Hi @bonnielu If you get a chance, check out Martha Stewart Cooking School - Legumes edition on line or on PBS. I watched it yesterday and she discusses three methods for cooking beans: Stovetop, pressure cooker and in the oven. I love that show even if she is not making something that I would eat. And why is it that when the husband does something they have to make a project out of it?

My hubby makes a production of everything. He can boil water, grind coffee and make beans. He spends hours cooking beans, just as he spent hours grinding and making coffee. I solved the coffee problem... I bought him a Keurig so I could play with it. In any case what device, product, cooker might cook beans quickly... Not fancy beans, not flavored beans, JUST BEANS and for me the GADGET QUEEN perhaps makes something more fun to eat.

Pressure Cooker? Rice Cooker? Anything. I have about had the bean thing.. married almost 50 years and I think I have had enough.

I love beans; pinto, great northern, October, lima, and navy. My brain has been trained to soak beans overnight, drain, pour into a heavy pot, cover with cold water, cook for several hours, then add ham or salt pork and cook until the bean soup is of desired consistency.

My Papaw didn't cook a lot, but was known to cook an awesome pot of pinto beans, and make great buckwheat cakes. His bean soup secret was to turn up the heat the last 20-30 minutes of cooking, and add about one tablespoon of white sugar. Since we have never fully replicated his pinto beans, we think his well water also made a big difference in taste.

Yes, hubby makes a project out of it. They are just beans. Nothing but water and beans. Yuk. He thinks they are healthy. I don't even want to list the other things he eats that ARE HEALTHY. But then he can wear the suit he got married in... after almost 50 years. My dress .... no way could I even think of ever wearing it..

I have a great Nesco pressure cooker, but I do prefer to cook my beans in a crock pot. Better texture and taste. In fact, doing black eyed peas with a wonderful ham bone tomorrow.
