A friend of my sister's worked at Pillsbury so somehow she received some cookbooks and gave one to me. For the longest time, I was a cookbook collector - enjoyed them as pleasure reading. I still have several, but have gotten rid of a lot too. It's so easy to find recipes online now that I hardly open a cookbook anymore.

Mine was a wedding gift also. I still have it and my mom's as well. I love that she made little notes in hers .🙂The page with Ethel's sugar cookies was so worn out and frayed and taped....it was our absolute favorite sugar cookie that has now been THE holiday must have for three generations now 😀

That was my bible, too. It's how I learned how to do much of my cooking. And what that book didn't teach me, my MIL did. So I was lucky.

I got married at 16, so I didn't have a lot of cooking expertise under my belt. In fact, it was all I could do to make a decent fried egg. So between Betty Crocker and my MIL (who had to take me under her wing because otherwise, her son would probably starve), I learned everything I needed to know.

That book has notes written all thoughout. It has dog-eared pages. It has a few torn pages. When my son left the house to go out on his own, he asked for that book. It has stood him as well as it did me.

I love to cook, I love to bake. And I love to collect cookbooks.

What cookbook did I start married life with? On our honeymoon I bought Diana Kennedy's The Art of Mexican Cooking. I also grew up reading Bon Appetit magazine and I cooked from it a lot. I already had a collection of cookbooks before I got married.

Better Homes & Gardens cook book circa 1963. Got it when I was married. A few years ago I got a newer addition as my old one showed its age. Much to my chagrin, it had changed some of its recipes, and I didn't care for them. I found a pristine circa 1963 copy at a rummage sale and bought it. It should last me for the duration.

The Joy of Cooking was one of my firsts. My edition is 30 years old and I have bought updates, but they aren't the same....I just love the stories! For example, the strudel recipe. One of the authors said that growing up, her family had a Hungarian laundress who used to make strudel when she had some spare time..... I still have that copy and I still enjoy it.

Poodlepet2
