If you are talking about Honey Baked Ham I would guess you should get it by Wednesday. I haven't gotten one for several years because the last one I got as so salty we had to thrown it away. Plus they are ridiculously expensive. We've been getting our ham from Costco for several years now. Got ours yesterday, 9 lbs for under $20.00.

How far in advance can I get a Honey Ham? I want to chomp on it for at least five days before I freeze it, but how long in advance of opening it can I go buy it? Any ideas?

I don't know what their expire date usually is. I'm gonna treat myself to a HONEY HAM this year! I can't wait, but don't want to open it until Christmas Day or after. So I don't know when to go get one!

THANKS for any ideas!

@SoonerI don't know your answer, but if they come vacuum packed, you can do it now for sure.

I also don't know the rules for freezing ham, but if it were any other meat, I'd wouldn't wait 5 days to freeze any of it. When I pretty much know I'll be freezing some, I freeze a chunk as soon as I can on the theory that the fresher it goes into the freeze, the better it will be when I take it out to use it.

Hopefully someone way more knowledeable about ham will answer you soon.

Marry Christmas in the meantime.

I would think it will depend on the store. I'd give them a call and ask if they have any available now and how long they should last because they will be super busy this week. We munch on ours at least five days or more. Not much gets to a freezer ... if any.

When you mentioned 'opening it' I was wondering - is this the sort of thing that comes in one of those tins with the key? If so, it's probably preserved into the next millenium so you have lots of time.

If it's a regular fresh or smoked ham, you probably still have several days on it, if stored properly. You know how I am about storing food! Such a neurotic.

I purchase the Kansas City hams because I really like them. But they come vacuum sealed already (perfect for me!) and frozen. I usually take it out of the freezer 2-3 days ahead of time, obviously, so it can thaw before preparing and putting in the oven. But we can eat off of that for quite a few days after and it's still perfectly good (stored in the refrigerator in Lock & Lock).

I don't know either. I do know my sister buys these & has to place her order before they sell out & pick it up. When I'm visiting & we go pick it up it's usually only 1-2 days before Christmas & they are packed.

If its a honey baked ham (from their store) I've gotten mine up to 4-5 days before and kept refrigerated. It doesn't have to be cooked -- just take a few pieces you want to nibble on right from it. (Unless you like it warm).

I just bought a boneless one for my upcoming Christmas dinner & open house on Sunday. I will cut it in 1/2 and do 1/2 each dinner.

I've froze it many times - defrosted it and its perfect (although I did NOT warm up the one I froze).

It's my favorite thing to get and I have to say it's getting more and more expensive each year -- and I haven't tried others.
